Roma transfer blog: All the main rumours for summer 2021 in one place

Conflicting claims over Lenglet bid

Sunday 25th July

Roma are ready to make a move for Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet, according to Sport.

Jose Mourinho could do with adding one more centre-back to his ranks after releasing Juan Jesus and removing Federico Fazio from the first-team squad.

Barcelona, where Mourinho used to work earlier in his career, currently need to offload some of their own players, and ex-Sevilla defender Lenglet is one who could make way.

Therefore, there could be an opportunity for Roma, who Sport claim have already seen a €15m bid rejected. Barcelona were keen on taking Lorenzo Pellegrini the other way, but the captain instead is close to renewing his contract.

It wouldn’t rule out a further bid from Roma for Lenglet, although Barca want around €25m despite their urgent need to reduce their wage bill.

West Ham and Everton are also keen on taking him to the Premier League on loan with an option to buy.

Il Tempo, who are better connected to Roma, deny there has been such an offer for Lenglet.

Vina arriving today

Sunday 25th July

It seemed there had been some last-minute hiccups in Roma’s deal to sign Matias Vina from Palmeiras, but any obstacles have now been overcome.

Multiple sources now claim it is a done deal and the left-back will disembark in Italy today.

Roma in Icardi talks?

If Edin Dzeko has to leave Roma this summer – due to his contract expiring in a year and his status as the club’s highest earner – then the dream replacement may be Mauro Icardi.

The Giallorossi are long-term admirers of Icardi, even if he has always seemed like an unrealistic objective. This year, there may be a decent chance of prising him away from Paris Saint-Germain.

In fact, according to La Repubblica, Icardi’s wife-agent Wanda Nara is in discussions with Roma over a potential return to Italy.

Roma would have to take him on loan, but they could do so for two years before having an obligation to buy him for between €30m and €35m.

Such a signing would be dependent on Dzeko leaving first, with Juventus maintaining an interest after coming close to him last summer.

The links between Roma and Andrea Belotti are showing no sign of slowing down. The striker is in the final year of his contract with Torino, who continue to ask for a high price regardless.

But Roma are still pondering a move for the Italy international, as he is yet to commit his future to his current club.

According to SportItalia, Roma have made enquiries with representatives of both the club and the player. However, the same goes for Sevilla, whose sporting director is none other than Roma pantomime villain Monchi.

A deal could be done for around €20m, but it remains to be seen if Roma or their ex-employee will get to it.

Maksimovic on midfield shortlist

Roma were linked with defender Nikola Maksimovic a couple of months back, but now they may have their eyes on someone else with that surname.

According to Marca, they are keen on Getafe midfielder Nemanja Maksimovic. The position does not seem to be a priority at present, unless any deal for Granit Xhaka falls through.

Even so, Roma are keeping tabs on the Serbian, but they could face a battle with Benfica – Tiago Pinto’s former club – for his services should they make a move.

Roma remain heavily interested in Eintracht Frankfurt wide man Filip Kostic, according to TeleRadioStereo, but would have to sign him on a permanent basis rather than on loan.

To do so, a bid of around €18m-€20m would be required.

Around one month ago, there was talk of Roma trying to sign Zenit Saint Petersburg striker Sardar Azmoun – and it has now resurfaced.

According to Sky Sport, the Iran international is one of the club’s primary options for the centre-forward role. However, Bayer Leverkusen are eyeing him as well, and would be willing to offer €18m.

Roma may only be able to compete with such a fee by offering other players as makeweights.

A couple of weeks back, there were some whispers around social media that Roma may be interested in Genoa attacker Eldor Shomurodov. It’s usually wise to ignore such rumours, but in this instance, there may have been some weight behind them.

Trustworthy reporter Alessandro Austini of Il Tempo claims that the Uzbekistan international, who scored eight goals in his debut Serie A season, is on the club’s striker shortlist.

The 26-year-old is versatile, which makes up for his less than prolific statistics, so may be one to keep an eye on.

It seems like we’ve been hearing this for a few weeks now, but the finishing line finally seems to be in sight for Roma’s pursuit of Granit Xhaka.

According to Sky Sport, negotiations are down to the final details and the deal should be complete by next week – giving Xhaka enough time to team up with the group when they visit Portugal for a pre-season training camp.

The midfielder has already agreed personal terms which will see him earn €2.5m per season for a four-year contract and now all that remains is for the two clubs to sort the last remaining factors in terms of a fee.

Pinto and Mourinho deciding Zalewski future

Thursday 22nd July

Roma will be eager to see how much their young talent develops under Jose Mourinho, and it seems he has a plan in mind for one of them.

According to Calciomercato, Sampdoria and Venezia would like to take Nicola Zalewski on loan, proposals which Tiago Pinto is considering.

However, Mourinho reportedly wants to keep the winger around and could give him opportunities, particularly in the Conference League.

One of the more high-profile names left out of Roma’s pre-season squad was Pedro, who could leave the club after just one season.

The former Barcelona and Chelsea forward struggled for consistency in his debut season in Serie A, although there were some higher points, like scoring in the Derby Della Capitale.

That goal may have been his last for the club, though, as he is currently training separately while Roma await offers.

According to Calciomercato, one could come from Genoa, who want to sign an experienced forward this summer.

The Premier League side have signed Albert Sambi Lokonga from Anderlecht to replace the Switzerland international, who is desperate to join Roma after Jose Mourinho made him a primary objective.

Now, according to Sky Sport, the agreement for Roma to take Xhaka is closer than ever. The midfielder is pushing Arsenal to let him leave and Roma are growing confident that he will be able to join them for their pre-season training camp in Portugal next week.

Chris Smalling may be speaking positively about his reunion with Jose Mourinho at Roma, but the English defender still faces a fight to rediscover the form of his first Serie A season. As such, there have been lingering murmurs about an exit.

It seems less likely now, but Roma are still being linked with potential replacements. The latest comes from Il Messaggero, who claim the club will turn to Feyenoord’s Marcos Senesi if they sell Smalling.

The Argentine centre-back has two years left on his Feyenoord contract and has been a regular player for the Dutch side. At present, he merely remains someone under consideration for Roma.

Kostic may be off the menu for Roma, but one winger they are very much still considering is Porto’s Luis Diaz.

The noises are coming mainly from Portugal, or his native Colombia, rather than Italy. However, those reporting on Roma’s pursuit think it is taking steps forward.

According to WinSport TV, Roma remain the most interested team in Diaz. In fact, they are ready to present an offer to Porto when the two sides meet for a friendly next week.

The sum of the bid will be €25m plus bonuses. Porto will listen to proposals for a player who matched Lionel Messi as the top scorer at the 2021 Copa America, but may hold out for a higher windfall.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, ReteSport and Il Tempo, Roma have made an offer of €10m plus €2.5m in bonuses. It has not been enough to tempt the Brazilian club, but a new bid of around €15m may do the trick.
