Roma transfer blog: All the main rumours for summer 2021 in one place

Fazio favours two-year contract to leave Roma

Sunday 22nd August

The Serie A season is about to begin for Roma, but one man who will not be involved is Federico Fazio.

Cast aside from the first team after a decline in recent years, Fazio has been instructed to find a new club.

According to Nicolo Schira, he has now attracted interest from a potential suitor: Genoa.

To sign for them, he would like to be offered a two-year contract.

Back to France for Bianda

Sunday 22nd August

Roma have confirmed the departure of William Bianda, one of Monchi’s signings who was not ready for first-team football, on loan to French side Nancy.

Grillitsch offered to Roma

Saturday 21st August

Roma’s desire for a new defensive midfielder has prompted intermediaries to offer them Hoffenheim’s Florian Grillitsch, according to Corriere Dello Sport.

However, Jose Mourinho wants a different type of player. Indeed, Roma remain keen on Denis Zakaria, as well as the likes of Lucas Torreira, Joao Palhinha and Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa.

Official: Florenzi leaves

Saturday 21st August

Alessandro Florenzi has left Roma again, this time joining Milan on loan with an option to buy.

He had some interesting words to say too

Providence leaves on loan

Friday 20th August

Ruben Providence will spend the 2021-22 season away from Roma on loan with Club Brugge, it has been confirmed.

Providence joined Roma’s Primavera side from PSG’s academy in 2019 but is yet to make a first-team breakthrough. He may have had a chance towards the back end of last season were it not for an injury.

Now back in shape, the winger will play for Club Brugge for the 2021-22 season. The Belgian side will have the option to buy him as well, meaning he may never get to play a senior game for Roma, despite signing a contract extension in November last year.

The 20-year-old had also been linked with Premier League club Southampton, but will instead be playing in Belgium this year, and potentially beyond.

Florenzi undergoes Milan medical

Friday 20th August

Alessandro Florenzi is in Milan to put the finishing touches to his move from Roma to the Rossoneri.

The Italy international underwent a medical with AC Milan on Friday and the transfer should become official soon.

Pair of Monchi flops set to leave

Friday 20th August

It may have been a couple of years since Monchi left Roma after his ill-fated reign as sporting director, but the club are still feeling the effects of that tenure.

Two players who fell way below the mark were William Bianda and Ante Coric. The defender and midfielder were both young at the time of their arrival and never progressed to senior standard, despite the latter making three first-team appearances.

Now they are both on their way out again following failed loans last season. According to Il Tempo, Bianda is heading back to his native France; a deal with Nancy is almost complete. Meanwhile, SportItalia state that Coric is set to sign for FC Zurich in Switzerland.

Done deal: Pedro leaves for Lazio

Thursday 19th August

And now it is official. After just one season with Roma, Pedro has moved into enemy territory by joining Lazio.

Torreira agent speaking to Arsenal

Thursday 19th August

One of Roma’s final targets for the transfer window is, if possible, a new midfielder to replace someone like Gonzalo Villar or Amadou Diawara.

Lucas Torreira is becoming a genuine option and, according to RomaPress, his agent has flown to London to discuss his situation with Arsenal.

Torreira would be open to returning to Italy and it is claimed that Roma remain a possibility.

Villar focused amid Sassuolo speculation

Wednesday 18th August

A possible exit route away from Roma has opened up for Gonzalo Villar – before being quickly shut down by the midfielder.

Il Tempo have reported today that Sassuolo are keen on the Spaniard and could work on a deal through intermediaries.

However, Villar took to Twitter to insist: “Enough with these things… only Roma.”

Pedro set to accept Lazio move

Wednesday 18th August

It is more than just an idea – Pedro really could be crossing the dividing line between Roma and Lazio.

According to La Repubblica, the winger has accepted the terms on offer from Roma’s rivals so he can reunite with Maurizio Sarri.

Roma will only ask for about €1-2m to get Pedro off the books. Should he make the move, he would become the first player to transfer directly from Roma to Lazio since Franco Cordova in 1976, nearly half a century ago.

Torreira a genuine option

Wednesday 18th August

Roma recently received the offer of Lucas Torreira’s services via an intermediary and it seems they were receptive to the idea.

According to Paolo Rocchetti, who works for LaRoma24 and TeleRadioStereo, Torreira is a real option for Roma’s midfield.

First of all, though, one of the less desirable options currently in the squad must make way – either Amadou Diawara or Gonzalo Villar.

Roma open to offers for Ibanez

Wednesday 18th August

Roma are yet to make a big sale this summer, which is a welcome change. However, with their spending higher than any other Italian club, perhaps one player may still make way.

According to Gazzetta Dello Sport, Roma will consider offers for Roger Ibanez if a suitable bid arrives.

The Brazilian centre-back started well after joining in January 2020, but endured a 2020-21 season littered with inconsistency. Roma are looking for a new centre-back in the latter stages of the window, so perhaps he could be a casualty.

Lazio to pinch Pedro?

Wednesday 18th August

Of the players told to train separately from the first-team squad this summer due to being out of the plans, the biggest name was Pedro.

The Spaniard suffered from inconsistency in his first season in the capital, despite his vast experience. However, he got himself back in the fans’ good books by scoring against Lazio in the last home game of the season.

One way to undo that would be to cross the dividing line by joining Lazio themselves. According to Alfredo Pedulla of SportItalia, that could be an option for Pedro.

A move to the blue side of Rome would reunite him with ex-Chelsea coach Maurizio Sarri, who wants another winger.

It would no doubt be a controversial move if it was to go through.

Kabak connection

Tuesday 17th August

All of a sudden, a flurry of defenders have been linked with Roma – and the latest is Ozan Kabak.

The Turkey international spent the second half of last season on loan at Liverpool, but they did not buy him permanently. After parent club Schalke suffered relegation from the Bundesliga, he is likely to be available for another transfer.

According to Tuttomercatoweb, Roma are keeping tabs on Kabak, but any move would depend on being able to get rid of Federico Fazio first. The Argentine has been training separately, but there has been little interest in him as of yet.

Zappacosta to come back?

Tuesday 17th August

With Alessandro Florenzi set to end any prospect of a Roma reintegration by joining Milan, the club may need tougher competition for Rick Karsdorp, in addition to Bryan Reynolds.

In a rather surprising claim, Il Romanista have suggested that Davide Zappacosta could come back to the club, after previously undergoing a loan spell when Karsdorp was back at Feyenoord in the 2019-20 season.

Zappacosta’s time at Roma was underwhelming due to injury, but he got back on track with Genoa last season. A number of clubs now want to take him back to Italy, and Il Romanista claim he could get a second chance in the capital.

The Chelsea wing-back has the same agent as Florenzi, so a deal would be doubly beneficial for him if he can orchestrate it.

Pinto asks about Pjanic?

Tuesday 17th August

In a move that would surely split opinion among the Roma fanbase, Tiago Pinto has reportedly asked Barcelona about Miralem Pjanic.

The Bosnian midfielder represented the club between 2011 and 2016, before leaving in controversial circumstances for Juventus. He left them for Barcelona last summer, but it has not gone to plan.

Therefore, Pjanic is now eyeing a return to Italy, and although Juventus look the likeliest suitors, they would have to sell Aaron Ramsey first.

Amid the situation, Tuttomercatoweb claim Roma general manager Pinto has made an enquiry about Pjanic. Jose Mourinho may still want another central midfielder after missing out on Granit Xhaka, of course.

DONE DEAL: Abraham joins the pack!

Tuesday 17th August

Roma have a new striker and it is an Englishman – Tammy Abraham has joined from Chelsea.

Two defensive options for Roma

Tuesday 17th August

With one more centre-back ideally required by Roma, two more suggestions have emerged.

According to LaRoma24, the Giallorossi are looking towards France. On their radar are Lille’s Sven Botman and Rennes’ Nayef Aguerd.

Aguerd is a new name, but Botman has been admired for a while. It remains to be seen which one Roma will move for.

With Chris Smalling set to miss the start of the season through injury, Roma have been sent a reminder that defensive depth will be essential this season.

Roma offered Torreira?

Tuesday 17th August

After the collapse of the Granit Xhaka deal, Roma need to sign a new midfielder – if they can shift one of their current options.

Ironically, the solution may also come from Arsenal, as Gazzetta Dello Sport claim that intermediaries have offered Roma the chance to sign Lucas Torreira.

However, Lazio are also keeping him in mind, so there could be a derby in the market.

Even so, other reports seem to concur that Denis Zakaria of Borussia Monchengladbach – coincidentally, one of Xhaka’s former clubs – is Roma’s main midfield target now.

Lenglet links get more weight

Monday 16th August

The sometimes sensationalistic El Chiringuito in Spain carried reports over the past 24 hours of Roma making an approach for Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet.

Whether a bid has been made or not is unclear, but Roma’s interest in Lenglet has now been confirmed by Gianluigi Longari of SportItalia. Longari, coincidentally, was the first to report of Roma’s interest in Matias Vina before the left-back joined.

Roma could still do with another centre-back and Lenglet might have the qualities they are looking for.

  1. These player links to Roma FC are quality ones which will definitely help Roma challenge for Champions league.

  2. I hope this time hose Roma can now contest for tittles Wit all these quality players coming in, Jose been in his years of experience will be able to make things right this time.

  3. It is pleasing to learn that Tammy is joining AS ROMA. This means now Jose Mourinho has a formidable and dependable striker In Tammy Abrahams. Personally I have a lot faith, respect and admiration for a young determined English striker. He is an asset to any club. ROMA AS are luck to sign such a an exciting striker

  4. This is a rebuilding process, many more changes might be needed to make @As Roma ready to win trophies. Though, with Jose Mourinho, things will get better this season and trophies should start coming from next season. Hala Roma!
