Arteta rules out Roma move for Xhaka

Sunday 1st August

Roma’s chances of signing Granit Xhaka have been fading in recent days and now Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has all but ended them.

Xhaka made a scoring return to pre-season training, after which he told “Granit is going to stay with us. He’s a player that we rate and value so much, he’s a key member of our squad.

“He’s trained two days. He wanted to play today and I think it’s very clear commitment from his side that he wants to be here.”

Roma will seemingly have to look elsewhere for a new midfielder for Mourinho.

Koopmeiners and Delaney the Xhaka alternatives

Sunday 1st August

Granit Xhaka is back at Arsenal after Roma failed to negotiate a deal for him within the ideal timeframe, but the club have not given up on Mourinho’s top target.

According to Corriere Dello Sport, Roma have set an internal deadline of mid-August to sign Xhaka before turning to other targets.

They are yet to meet Arsenal’s asking price and their hopes of it reducing are, well, reducing themselves.

If they can’t get Xhaka, Gazzetta Dello Sport claim they will pursue either Thomas Delaney of Borussia Dortmund or Teun Koopmeiners of AZ Alkmaar.

Options open for Florenzi

Sunday 1st August

It was originally thought that Alessandro Florenzi would train with the Roma first-team upon his return from holiday, but last season’s PSG loanee is now not expected to.

The right-back’s situation is a bit of a mess, as it seems he does not want to return to his boyhood club despite Mourinho calling him.

Florenzi, a former Roma captain, would prefer to play elsewhere as a regular starter, but finding a solution has been difficult. He is not keen on playing for another Italian club, yet has few options abroad.

According to Gazzetta Dello Sport, Florenzi’s main admirers are Serie A side Fiorentina and Ligue 1’s Lyon.

Fiorentina wanted to sign ex-Roma loanee Davide Zappacosta but have encountered difficulties in that pursuit, so could turn to the 30-year-old instead. Lyon, on the other hand, are aware of his ability after his time in France last season.

Sevilla ask about Villar?

Sunday 1st August

Roma drew with Sevilla in their latest pre-season friendly yesterday, but one man who was not involved was Gonzalo Villar.

The reason was injury, but the Spaniard may not even feature in Jose Mourinho’s plans when fit.

Roma could listen to offers for the midfielder despite his potential, and Calciomercato claim Sevilla themselves have spoken about a transfer.

It is not unrealistic to imagine Roma quadrupling their money on Villar, whom they signed for just €5m in January 2020.

Xhaka pursuit about to end?

Friday 30th July

They say good things come to those who wait, but maybe not in this instance. Roma’s weeks-long pursuit of Granit Xhaka could have a bad ending.

With the club still yet to put up the price Arsenal are asking for, the Swiss midfielder could now stay at the Emirates Stadium.

Should that happen, Roma have been linked with Borussia Dortmund’s Thomas Delaney instead.

Antonucci says addio

Friday 30th July

Mirko Antonucci has left Roma permanently after a series of loan spells away, joining Cittadella.

Shomurodov medical on Monday

Thursday 29th July

The agreement has been found – Eldor Shorumodov will transfer from Genoa to Roma.

Various sources are indicating that his medical will take place on Monday, after which he can become Jose Mourinho’s new striker.

Shomurodov and Vina announced today?

Thursday 29th July

Roma could imminently take their number of summer signings from one to three. According to various sources, the deals for Matias Vina and Eldor Shorumodov could become official today.

Corriere Dello Sport reveal that Roma found an agreement with Genoa yesterday to take striker Shorumodov on loan for €2m with an obligation to buy for €16m, depending on certain conditions.

Gazzetta Dello Sport claim that one of Nicola Zalewski, Riccardo Ciervo or Edoardo Bove, all among Roma’s most promising Primavera players, could head the other way to sweeten the deal further.

Meanwhile, Il Romanista report that left-back Vina, who is currently in quarantine in Rome, will be unveiled as a Roma player today.

He will act as the short-term replacement for the injured Leonardo Spinazzola after joining from Palmeiras.

Mourinho considers Villar exit

Thursday 29th July

Despite all the positives that come with appointing Jose Mourinho, he does seem to obstruct some players wherever he goes – and it seems his first major casualty at Roma has been identified.

According to Tuttomercatoweb, Mourinho does not consider Gonzalo Villar non-transferrable and the midfielder – who featured heavily under Paulo Fonseca last season – could return to Spain.

Villar could leave if the price is right, potentially giving Roma a major profit – which may be important given the investments made in signings this summer.

The rumours linking Roma with Genoa striker Eldor Shomurodov have been increasing in recent days and now several reliable sources indicate a deal is likely.

Calciomercato reported on Wednesday that a meeting was due to take place between Tiago Pinto and the player’s agent.

Genoa are holding out for €20m, but Roma could lower the price by sending players in the opposite direction.

The report was followed by one from Gianluca Di Marzio, who claims the deal could be a loan with an obligation to buy.

Il Tempo, who have been following this story for a while, also back up that Shomurodov is rising up Roma’s shortlist, with a deal being well advanced.

Jose Mourinho has never coached the Uzbek international before, but has known him personally for more than two years.

Barco on Roma radar

Wednesday 28th July

The Olympic football tournament may not be the standout event of the showpiece competition, but it is giving some players a chance to impress.

One of those is Ezequiel Barco, a 22-year-old winger who is representing Argentina. He currently plays for MLS side Atlanta United, but is now being linked with a move to Europe.

According to Calciomercato, Roma are one of the teams monitoring the attacking midfielder – as are Monchi’s Sevilla.

Roma rival Atalanta for Olympic defender

Tuesday 27th July

Roma remain interested in adding another defender to their ranks and according to, they are interested in Ohis Felix Uduokhai of Augsburg.

Currently representing Germany at the Olympics, he is left footed and can also play as a full-back if needed, which may be useful for Roma.

The website claims Atalanta are also keen on Uduokhai, who could cost €15m.

Sorloth on striker shortlist

Tuesday 27th July

A new name is in the frame as Roma seek to strengthen up front: Alexander Sorloth.

The Norway international has followed a peculiar career path, going from Crystal Palace flop to Trabzonspor hotshot and then back to a struggler with RB Leipzig.

The Bundesliga side only signed him last summer, but he did not enjoy a successful debut season. Therefore, he could be up for sale, potentially pointing to a transfer to Roma (as per Tuttomercatoweb).

However, he is far from the first choice option at present. Still, the scouting team are aware of him.

Shomurodov stance set

Tuesday 27th July

Genoa forward Eldor Shomurodov remains one of the main attackers on Roma’s mind as they seek extra competition for Edin Dzeko – who says he is tired of hearing speculation about a potential exit – and Borja Mayoral, who is on loan for another season from Real Madrid.

According to Calciomercato, Roma do not want to offer any more than €15m for the Uzbekistan international. Genoa, on the other hand, want at least €20m.

Genoa are already eyeing replacements for Shomurodov, though, so Roma have a decent chance of signing him.

Olsen could still end up in France

Monday 26th July

While there are still doubts over Robin Olsen’s proposed move to Lille, the unwanted goalkeeper does have another admirer in France.

According to Sky Sport, Rennes are now showing an interest in the Sweden number one.

Their pursuit is still in its infancy, though, so Roma cannot expect a sale immediately. Still, this could be one to keep an eye on.

Vina in isolation after arrival

Monday 26th July

Matias Vina arrived in Rome late last night, despite Palmeiras denying they have agreed a deal with Roma yet.

The two clubs are still finalising the details of the transfer, but the Brazilian club have permitted Vina to travel to Italy for his medical.

It seems a matter of when, not if, he will become a Roma player. For the time being, he will haver to undergo a 10-day period of quarantine following his entry into Italy.

Even so, he will be allowed to start his medical examinations this week while Roma continue the concluding stages of the negotiations with Palmeiras.

Coric close to Zurich

Monday 26th July

Ante Coric was described as the new Luka Modric when Monchi brought him to Roma in 2018. Three years later, Modric is a Ballon d’Or winner who remains one of the best in the world, while Coric is stranded on three Roma appearances.

Given that he is 24, Roma need to find a solution for the midfielder – preferably a permanent one.

According to Corriere Dello Sport, Coric is now looking likely to join Zurich in Switzerland after loan spells in three other countries during his Roma career.

Olsen exit stalls

Monday 26th July

Roma were hoping to offload Robin Olsen to Lille after the signing of Rui Patricio in goal, but according to Corriere Dello Sport, the deal has stalled.

Lille seem to be focusing instead on Steve Mandanda, who is leaving Marseille following their acquisition of – coincidentally – Pau Lopez from Roma.

Therefore, Roma need to find a new suitor for Olsen, who does not feature in their plans given the presence of Patricio and Daniel Fuzato.
