Roma transfer blog: All the main rumours for summer 2021 in one place

Dzeko disarray prompts striker scramble

Sunday 8th August

Yet again, Edin Dzeko seems on the verge of a Roma exit, with multiple reports linking him with Inter Milan in the event of Romelu Lukaku moving to Chelsea. The transfer will have a domino effect, with Inter trying again to sign Dzeko after his swap with Alexis Sanchez fell through in January.

Dzeko has reportedly agreed a two-year contract at the San Siro, but will have to wait for Roma to sign a replacement before he can leave – just like how his move to Juventus collapsed last summer.

Since the news, there has been an explosion of links with strikers. Mauro Icardi and Andrea Belotti remain the most regularly mentioned, but there have been several other suggestions.

For example, Sardar Azmoun of Zenit Saint-Petersburg is apparently the top target, according to Corriere Dello Sport. Contact is said to have been made, but the Iran international would cost €25m.

Indeed, finding a replacement for Dzeko won’t be cheap; Icardi too would be a costly deal, while Torino want at least €18m for Belotti, according to Calciomercato.

Other names linked include Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham (although it would have to be a two-year loan due to his €40m price tag), Arsenal’s Alexandre Lacazette (but relations with the Gunners are weak following the failure to complete a transfer for midfielder Granit Xhaka), Real Sociedad’s Alexander Isak (whom Sky Sport claim is the top target) and Benfica’s Haris Seferovic. Even Gianluca Scamacca of Sassuolo has returned on the agenda, a few weeks after his father broke into the club’s training centre…

It will no doubt be an exhaustive search if Roma have to replace a club legend, which once again seems a growing possibility.

Arriva Vina!

Sunday 8th August

It’s finally a done deal – Roma have confirmed the signing of Matias Vina.

Ferrero wants Florenzi?

Friday 6th August

With Sampdoria president Massimo Ferrero hoping to push winger Mikkel Damsgaard to Roma, Corriere Dello Sport speculate that he could ask for Alessandro Florenzi or Amadou Diawara in the opposite direction.

Neither are first-team regulars at Roma and could leave to reduce the wage bill. In return, Roma could get an exciting talent.

The priority remains to sign a central midfielder, though. Although Ferrero believes Damsgaard would be adequate for that role, it would be more sensible for the Giallorossi to look at someone like Thomas Delaney or Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa.

Double departure for expensive flops?

Thursday 5th August

Two of the most high-profile players Monchi brought to Roma who went on to miss the mark in terms of expectations were Javier Pastore and Steven Nzonzi. Both were acquired for big transfer fees with high wages, despite their advancing years.

Three years on, both remain at the club and it is now essential to get them off the books. A solution, according to TeleRadioStereo, may come from Qatar.

The outlet claims Al Rayyan are weighing up moves for both Nzonzi and Pastore. Their manager is Laurent Blanc and he could seek to reunite with ex-PSG prodigy Pastore.

Whether either player wants to leave Europe is up for question, but the finances on offer in the Middle East could always be tempting.

Inter eye Dzeko again?

Thursday 5th August

Roma may be looking forward to having a squad with three strikers next season, but other clubs are still trying to deprive them of one.

It is a tradition at the club that Edin Dzeko will be linked with an exit every summer, and although he looks likelier to stay this year, there are unsurprisingly further rumours about his future.

According to FCInterNews, Dzeko is still on Inter’s radar as they look for a cheaper replacement for Romelu Lukaku, who could return to Chelsea.

A plethora of names have been linked with cash-strapped Inter, though, so Roma will be hoping they can keep hold of Dzeko to benefit Borja Mayoral and Eldor Shomurodov.

Mourinho contacts Delaney

Thursday 5th August

Among the main names linked as an alternative target to Xhaka has been Thomas Delaney of Borussia Dortmund. According to Il Tempo, Mourinho has now made contact with the Denmark international.

However, his profile does not convince the club fully; he is almost 30 years old and has had injury problems. Therefore, it seems this file has been put on the shelves.

Meanwhile, Il Romanista insist Teun Koopmeiners of AZ is still high on the list, while the dream would be Douglas Luiz of Aston Villa. The latter could only arrive, though, if Roma could raise about €25m-€30m in player sales.

Zambo Anguissa added to Xhaka backup list

Thursday 5th August

As the fall-out from Roma’s failure to land Granit Xhaka continues, the club are working to find an additional midfield reinforcement for Jose Mourinho.

The latest name to be linked is Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa, who was part of a Fulham side who suffered relegation from the Premier League last season despite having enough individual talent to avoid such a fate.

According to Il Messaggero, Roma are monitoring his situation, because he wants to leave the Championship for a higher level. Champions League is not a requirement, so Roma could tempt him if they firm up any interest.

Damsgaard pushed towards Roma

Wednesday 4th August

Of the options Roma have as an alternative to Granit Xhaka, one of the more surprising would be Mikkel Damsgaard.

The Sampdoria and Denmark winger is a fine player, but he isn’t exactly a like-for-like clone of Xhaka, instead playing in a wider and more attacking position.

But according to Gazzetta Dello Sport, Roma are monitoring Damsgaard with the idea of using him in midfield.

Notorious Sampdoria president Massimo Ferrero, a Roma fan, has even added fuel to the fire by claiming he could push Damsgaard towards the capital club.

Ferrero told Corriere Dello Sport: “Damsgaard is the midfielder that is needed. If they call me, we will find an agreement. Damsgaard is better than Xhaka.”

Whether that is true or not, it doesn’t change the fact that he is a completely different kind of player. But if Roma were to sign someone else in defensive midfield, Damsgaard would be an adequate solution for a role as a winger.

Sampdoria could sell him to raise funds and Ferrero’s fondness for Roma may come in handy.

Zenit want Pedro

Tuesday 3rd August

Roma are hoping to offload Pedro before the season begins after an inconsistent year in the capital. Finding a suitor for the 34-year-old may be tough, but according to Il Romanista, Zenit St Petersburg would be interested in taking him to Russia.

DONE DEAL: Roma sign Shomurodov

Monday 2nd August

Jose Mourinho has his new striker. Eldor Shomurodov has joined Roma from Genoa.

Atletico and Sevilla suitors for Florenzi

Monday 2nd August

Alessandro Florenzi wants his next move away from Roma to be outside of Italy, although an exact destination remains unclear.

He has spent time on loan at Valencia and PSG over the last couple of seasons and could be set to return to La Liga.

According to Calciomercato, Spanish champions Atletico Madrid and Monchi’s Sevilla are weighing up a move for the right-back.
