Roma transfer blog: All the main rumours for summer 2021 in one place

Wolves want Diawara

Sunday 15th August

While working on the Abraham deal, Tiago Pinto has been utilising other connections in the UK for various outgoing transfers.

The director is overseeing several other negotiations, including those for players who could be sold to destinations in the Premier League or Championship.

Sheffield United still want to sign Robin Olsen, but the chances of Carles Perez joining Newcastle are slimming.

One transfer that remains on the agenda is that of Amadou Diawara to Wolves. The midfielder has been inconsistent at Roma and new Wolves boss Bruno Lage wants to sign him still.

Roma would benefit from selling Diawara, as it would free up space for a new defensive midfielder to arrive. However, Il Romanista warn that he is refusing several destinations.

Thus, Wolves will have to step up their efforts to convince him. But as the Abraham to Roma saga has shown, stances can always change.

Abraham arriving today

Sunday 15th August

It hasn’t taken long for Roma to move on from Edin Dzeko. Their new striker will be on his way today, because Tammy Abraham has finally said yes to the club.

The striker will join from Chelsea in a club-record transfer and inherit the number nine shirt. It’s only a matter of time now…

Official: Dzeko era ends

Saturday 14th August

He came, he saw, he conquered. A legend has left Roma after six rollercoaster years. Edin Dzeko is no longer a Roma player, but an Inter Milan one.

Dzeko deal unlocked

Saturday 14th August

Edin Dzeko has been in Milan for a few days, but his move to Inter is not yet official. The former captain has been resolving some issues with Roma, but those now appear to have been resolved.

According to reports, the striker could be announced as an Inter player tonight, officially marking the end of an era for one of Roma’s greatest ever goalscorers.

Conti could arrive in Florenzi swap?

Saturday 14th August

Roma and Milan are still working on the sale of Alessandro Florenzi from former to latter. The Giallorossi want to ensure there is an obligation to buy in any loan deal after Valencia and PSG both sent him back to the capital after similar spells.

According to Il Tempo, Milan have offered Roma a new solution: a straight swap involving Andrea Conti.

The former Atalanta man has struggled with injuries throughout his career and spent last season on loan at Parma. Given his record, he may be a risk for Roma, but they do need more depth at right-back.

It is not clear how they will respond to the Rossoneri’s idea.

Abraham one step away from Roma

Saturday 14th August

The finishing line is finally in sight. Tammy Abraham is on the verge of becoming a Roma player – and their most expensive ever signing.

Sky Sport claim the deal is almost done, for a combined fee of around €45m.

La Repubblica add that he has been convinced by Jose Mourinho’s strong desire to sign him.

LaRoma24 claim that news of Roma raising their salary offer to one of €6m is fake. Abraham will instead join on the terms previously expected.

We’re getting close.

Roma make more Abraham progress

Friday 13th August

It seems Tammy Abraham is warming to the idea of playing for Roma, despite initially preferring Arsenal.

Thanks to the work of Tiago Pinto and Jose Mourinho, the Englishman is now seeing Rome as a viable destination.

According to La Repubblica, in fact, Roma have raised their wage offer to him to give him €6m per season net.

Pinto remains in London and although Abraham is in Chelsea’s squad for their season opener tomorrow, could be confident of getting a yes soon.

Another day for Abraham as striker reflects

Friday 13th August

Tiago Pinto has met face to face with top target Tammy Abraham today in an effort to persuade him to join from Chelsea.

While he remains hopeful of joining Arsenal instead, Corriere Dello Sport claim Abraham is appreciative of how much Roma are pushing for him.

Pinto’s personal involvement may be helping him warm to the move, but he is still yet to commit.

According to Sky Sport, Pinto will remain in London for another day, presumably with more meetings planned. It seems to contradict the idea that today was the deadline for Abraham to accept Roma’s advances. Perhaps the club feel there is progress being made which is worth continuing to work on.

Only time will tell.

Lacazette links denied

Friday 13th August

There has been some speculation in recent days of Roma signing Alexandre Lacazette from Arsenal if they miss out on Tammy Abraham.

However, the Frenchman’s agent has now told LaRoma24 that he has had no contact with Tiago Pinto.

Roma retain Xhaka hope?

Friday 13th August

Roma are beginning to plan for the season without main target Granit Xhaka, who seemed likely to join before a U-turn prompted Arsenal to offer him a new contract.

Thus, the Giallorossi have had to consider a number of alternatives. But according to Corriere Dello Sport, a glimmer of hope remains that Xhaka can still join.

Despite various sources indicating he has agreed a new deal with Arsenal, it is not official yet. Until the signature goes on the paper, Roma still have an outside chance of getting their man.

But Corriere Dello Sport also report that Denis Zakaria and Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa remain of interest as more likely alternatives.

Iheanacho idea as Abraham alternative

Friday 13th August

If Roma cannot convince Tammy Abraham to join, then Sky Sports believe the alternative could also be in the Premier League.

Kelechi Iheanacho is reportedly of interest after falling down the pecking order at Leicester. Despite doing well for them last season, the Foxes signed Patson Daka this summer.

Although they may retain Iheanacho with a view to a future after Jamie Vardy, Roma could try to prise the Nigeria international away.

However, the ex-Manchester City man only signed a new contract with Leicester in April.

New Abraham meeting tomorrow

Thursday 12th August

Roma are still trying to convince Tammy Abraham to accept their offer of personal terms so he can join from Chelsea. Tiago Pinto met with his entourage today, but there has been no breakthrough yet.

According to Corriere Dello Sport, Pinto has clarified that the striker will receive the number nine shirt, a salary of €4.5m and a guaranteed starting spot.

But Abraham is still waiting for Arsenal to make a bid to Chelsea, even though the Blues are unlikely to sell to their rivals.

Il Tempo report that a new meeting will take place tomorrow, in which Abraham may be personally present.

Yorkshire future for Olsen?

Thursday 12th August

Roma must still find a suitor for Robin Olsen after his loan spell with Everton last season. In fact, his future could still be in England – and not too far from this site.

According to Nicolo Schira, Sheffield United are interested in the Swedish shot-stopper. It seems somewhat peculiar, as they have dropped to the Championship and are fending off bids for Aaron Ramsdale.

However, the Blades could still be considering Olsen just in case. He has also been linked with West Ham, but they have already signed Alphonse Areola.

Coutinho offered to Roma

Thursday 12th August

The attacking midfield position does not seem a priority for Roma at present. However, an unlikely link has emerged in that territory.

According to La Repubblica, Roma are one of three Italian clubs to be offered Barcelona playmaker Philippe Coutinho.

His move to the La Liga giants never quite worked out and they are now looking to offload him to balance the books. However, his wages would be excessive – even if the Growth Decree could help.

Milan and Lazio have also been offered the Brazilian, though. Instead, it is Roma’s city rivals who seem most receptive to a potential deal.

Two suitors for Santon

Thursday 12th August

Davide Santon is one of many players excluded by Roma but yet to find a new club. However, there appears to be something brewing in the background.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Serie A newcomers Salernitana are considering a move for the full-back. He would have to lower his salary to join them, though.

Alternatively, LaRoma24 reveal that Turkish side Antalyaspor have also made an enquiry about the 30-year-old.

Roma are aiming to sell Santon this summer, because his contract expires next year. They would likely only receive a minimal fee for him, though.

More striker alternatives on decisive day for Abraham

Thursday 12th August

Today is the anniversary of Edin Dzeko officially becoming a Roma player, but it could also be the day he leaves the club. When his move to Inter goes through, it will be an urgent priority to find a replacement.

Tammy Abraham is the first choice, but a few alternatives have emerged. According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Roma are considering Matheus Cunha of Hertha Berlin or Rodrigo Muniz of Flamengo.

Both would be younger options, aged 22 and 20 respectively. Interestingly, Muniz is also on the radar of North Yorkshire outfit Middlesbrough, which would be a unique transfer battle.

Corriere Dello Sport back up both suggestions but also insist Sardar Azmoun is the main plan B. Also in contention still are Sasa Kalajdzic, Andrea Belotti and Alexander Sorloth.

Various sources are confirming that Arsenal have offered Roma the services of Alexandre Lacazette, too. Meanwhile, Il Romanista suggest agent Fali Ramadani offered Luka Jovic to Roma in a meeting yesterday.

But Roma will try to close the operation for Abraham today, who has been in further conversation with Jose Mourinho, as per Corriere Dello Sport. The Chelsea striker did not feature in his side’s triumph in the UEFA Super Cup last night.

While he is still holding out for Arsenal, Roma could set a deadline of the end of today before moving on to alternatives. Hope remains that they will be able to convince him to try out Serie A.

Pinto in England to discuss Abraham

Wednesday 11th August

No closer to convincing Tammy Abraham to choose them ahead of Arsenal, Roma are stepping up their efforts to persuade the Chelsea striker.

He is currently in Belfast with the Blues for the UEFA Super Cup, but that hasn’t stopped Tiago Pinto flying to London to meet with his entourage.

Pinto will make a further pitch, potentially even meeting Abraham after he returns from his Super Cup involvement.

His representatives are open to the idea of sending him to Roma, but the player himself must make the decision.

Meanwhile, RomaPress claim that Pinto will also hold a meeting with agent Fali Ramadani to discuss Zenit frontman Sardar Azmoun, who will likely leave Russia this year and could be pushed towards Italy.

Furthermore, Calciomercato suggest that Pinto could be receptive to an offer of Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette.

Edin Dzeko, for what it’s worth, is currently in Milan to finalise his move to Inter.

Zakaria interest confirmed

Wednesday 11th August

With Granit Xhaka seemingly no longer in Roma’s reachable distance, the club are looking at alternative midfield targets.

One could come from Xhaka’s former club Borussia Monchengladbach. There have been rumours about interest in Denis Zakaria, which has now been backed up by Bild.

However, there is competition from Napoli, Tottenham, Everton and even Xhaka’s current employers Arsenal.

Aston Villa set El Ghazi price

Wednesday 11th August

Roma continue to be linked with Aston Villa winger Anwar El Ghazi on a fairly infrequent basis. The latest of the sporadic updates comes again from English outlet Football Insider; they claim Roma will enter talks over the Dutchman later this month.

The report also adds that Villa are holding out for £17m for the 26-year-old, which equates to about €20m.

Newcastle consider Perez

Wednesday 11th August

Although remaining part of the first-team group this summer, Carles Perez could be subject of offers that Roma would take into consideration. The winger has been inconsistent in his 18 months with the club, although has shown glimpses of potential in pre-season.

According to Calciomercato, though, Newcastle are interested in taking Perez on loan with a view to a permanent deal. The report suggests the Spaniard could choose to depart.

Dzeko given green light to join Inter

Tuesday 10th August

The end is nigh for Edin Dzeko at Roma; after many transfer windows of being linked with a move away, it seems this will be the one in which he leaves.

Dzeko is set to join Inter after returning to Trigoria today. According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Roma have given him the go ahead to travel to Milan.

The transfer could become official tomorrow, suggesting Roma have done some work on finding a replacement.

That man looks likely to be Tammy Abraham after a fee was agreed with Chelsea. Work needs to be done to convince the player, who reportedly has an agreement with Arsenal, but Jose Mourinho is said to have contacted him to help convince him.

Abraham will be involved in the UEFA Super Cup with Chelsea tomorrow, whether he plays or not, so the transfer could only go through after. But Roma seem confident enough of something happening to allow Dzeko to leave.

Roma and Chelsea reach Abraham agreement

Tuesday 10th August

News broke overnight the Roma have found the man they want to be their new striker: Tammy Abraham.

The England international has emerged as the leading candidate to take over from Edin Dzeko. A deal could well be close, with Sky Sport reporting that Roma have reached an agreement with Chelsea to take Abraham.

The Giallorossi would pay €5m to take him on loan for the season before a further payment of around €40m to make the deal permanent. All that remains is for the player himself to accept Roma as a destination.

He has also been linked with Arsenal, but Chelsea prefer to sell him to a team outside the Premier League. Atalanta have also been linked, but Roma appear to be close now.

Mourinho makes Abraham top target

Monday 9th August

The rumours about Roma wanting Tammy Abraham to replace Edin Dzeko are growing, with Corriere Dello Sport now getting in on the act.

The newspaper claims Jose Mourinho has told the club that Abraham is his preferred option in the transfer market. As seen with the Granit Xhaka saga, it does not mean he will arrive, but it seems he is the one they are pushing for.

However, Chelsea value the Englishman at €47m, which would be a club-record fee for Roma. La Magica would prefer to sign Abraham on loan with an option to buy – if they can beat rival competition from Atalanta.

More striker suggestions

Monday 9th August

Edin Dzeko looks likely to join Inter in the coming days, forcing Roma to find a successor. A huge shortlist emerged yesterday, which has now been clarificed by other sources.

According to Il Tempo, Tammy Abraham of Chelsea is at the top of the list, but it would have to be a loan with an obligation to buy. They also mention Alexander Isak of Real Sociedad, but he costs too much. A third suggestion is Odsonne Edouard of Celtic, who is now back on the radar after those links went quiet for a few months.

Meanwhile, in Portugal, Record report that Mourinho wants Haris Seferovic of Benfica, although not for the €25m asking price.

Florenzi finds suitor in Serie A

Monday 9th August

Alessandro Florenzi remains on the lookout for a new club, preferably outside of Italy. However, he still has admirers in his home country, which could give him something to think about.

According to Sky Sport, AC Milan are now interested in taking the Euro 2020 winner on loan. They have come forward with a proposition that would include an option to buy, which Roma would like to be an obligation if Milan qualify for the Champions League.
