Roma transfer news blog: All the mid-season rumours in one place

Valencia back in for Villar?

Wednesday 27th October

Gonzalo Villar has been excluded from the Roma squad for two games in a row and seems to have no future under Jose Mourinho.

A transfer is therefore likely in January and the Spaniard only added fuel to the flames by posting an Instagram story (now deleted) of a finished hourglass next to the word Roma yesterday.

Still a talented player, he will have many admirers and Roma should make a profit on him. According to Spanish source Todofichajes, he has many suitors back in his homeland.

Valencia are among them, which would mark a return to his former youth club. Los Che opted not to use a buyback clause on Villar when Roma signed him instead from Elche in 2020.

Apparently, they also face competition from Monchi’s Sevilla and their cross-city rivals Real Betis.

Milan to make Diawara move?

Wednesday 27th October

Amadou Diawara has reached a standstill in a once promising Roma career. With midfield still an area to strengthen in January, it seems he could be a casualty.

According to Todofichajes – who admittedly aren’t always the most reliable source – AC Milan could be interested in taking him elsewhere in Serie A.

Milan are currently fearful of losing Franck Kessie on a free in 2022 and could replace him with another African.

Out of contract at the end of the season, Lorenzo Insigne is one of the most in-demand players in the Italian market.

The winger could leave Napoli as a free agent if they can’t find a compromise over a renewal and many clubs are already looking at him.

According to Rai Sport journalist Ciro Venerato, Roma are among the clubs considering him and could accommodate the €6m salary he is seeking.

Jose Mourinho was seen laughing with Insigne on the touchline during the draw with Napoli at the weekend.

Ceballos suggestion for January

Monday 25th October

Jose Mourinho’s recent outburst about a lack of squad depth at Roma has already ignited more transfer rumours ahead of January.

According to El Nacional, one player he is interested in is Dani Ceballos.

The creative midfielder returned to Real Madrid in the summer after a loan spell with Arsenal and isn’t finding much space.

He isn’t the defensive midfielder Roma need, but would be useful for depth in similar territory.

Riqui Puig on midfield radar

Friday 15th October

A new midfielder has emerged onto Roma’s wishlist, according to El Nacional in Catalonia, who claim Riqui Puig is of interest.

The 22-year-old is finding little room at Barcelona but is thought to have decent potential.

A change of scenery could be on the cards for the youngster, although he would be hoping to fare better than, for example, Carles Perez if making the move from Barca to Roma.

At present, it still seems Roma are focusing on different profiles in the middle of the park.

Bereszynski to back up Karsdorp?

Tuesday 12th October

A new name has emerged in Roma’s hunt for a more dependable backup for Rick Karsdorp than Bryan Reynolds.

Mourinho does not trust the USA international, whose performances have shown why. Therefore, in January, it will be crucial to find a more experienced and reliable vice-Karsdorp.

According to Corriere Dello Sport, that man could be Bartosz Bereszynski of Sampdoria.

The 29-year-old is under contract until 2023 and has been with Samp since 2017. He has the experience Roma would require.

With that in mind, he is currently ahead of the more youthful Noussair Mazraoui and Marcus Holmgren Pedersen, who have also been linked, in the club’s thinking.
