Two done deals in one day for Roma’s midfield. Farewell to Jordan Veretout, who has joined Marseille, and welcome to Georginio Wijnaldum, whose move on loan from PSG is now official.

Roma sign Georginio Wijnaldum to modify midfield ranks as Jordan Veretout is sold

Wijnaldum lands in Rome

Thursday 4th August

He’s here! Georginio Wijnaldum is all set to become a Roma player after his flight touched down at Ciampino airport.

The midfielder will next undergo his medical checks ahead of completing his loan move from PSG, after an agreement was reached between the clubs.

Roma ready to sign Bailly

Thursday 4th August

It is not only Wijnaldum, but also Eric Bailly who could be about to join Roma.

Various reports are now indicating an agreement is close to take the defender on loan from Manchester United. According to Calciomercato, there will be an option to buy for €8m.

Hence, with Andrea Belotti set to sign too once Eldor Shomurodov leaves, Roma could practically conclude their summer business before the season starts.

There will likely be further developments regarding Bailly to keep abreast of.

Terms finalised for Veretout exit

Thursday 4th August

After three seasons, Jordan Veretout is leaving Roma. His move to Marseille has now been agreed; the French side will pay €11m, according to Gianluca Di Marzio, plus €4.5m in bonuses related to his appearance tally and Marseille’s standing.

Kluivert close to Fulham

Thursday 4th August

Justin Kluivert is on the verge of leaving Roma again – and this time we will see him in England.

The winger has been linked with Fulham in recent days, and the move is now getting closer, per Tuttomercatoweb. Kluivert has chosen the Premier League side as his next destination and they will pay around €10m to buy him.

Veretout moving to Marseille

Wednesday 3rd August

As Wijnaldum prepares to join Roma, Jordan Veretout prepares to leave. He is a top target for Marseille and progress has been made.

According to L’Equipe, Veretout already has an agreement over personal terms to return to France. Marseille are in talks with Roma and are confident of completing a €10m purchase.

Wijnaldum breakthrough

Wednesday 3rd August

Finally, it is almost time for Georginio Wijnaldum to become a Roma player. Fabrizio Romano and Gianluca Di Marzio confirmed overnight that there is now an agreement between Roma and PSG for his loan move, so it is now a matter of time.

Di Marzio adds that Roma hope for Wijnaldum to land in Italy tomorrow. Elsewhere, La Repubblica are hinting that he could be presented to the fans at Sunday’s friendly against Shakhtar.

Villar on verge of Sampdoria switch

Tuesday 2nd August

Roma have been busily trying to find a buyer for Gonzalo Villar this summer. Now, he could be closing in on a move to Sampdoria.

According to Gazzetta Dello Sport, Sampdoria’s sale of Mikkel Damsgaard – who is linked with Brentford – would allow them to come back in for Villar. The Spaniard is one of the players Roma need to move on to clear space for their remaining objectives.

Earlier it was reported by Corriere Dello Sport that the deal could be done within 48 hours. The only dilemma at present is whether the loan would be attached to an option to buy (as Samp would prefer) or an obligation (as Roma would).

Wijnaldum hold-up

Tuesday 2nd August

Roma were hoping to make more progress with Georginio Wijnaldum this week, but things have taken a turn.

According to Le Parisien, the midfielder does not want to take a pay-cut to join Roma from PSG, despite already giving up some bonuses.

Hence, his wage package would be worth a fixed €7m per season, of which Roma would be expected to pay 65% (€4.55m).

Belotti agreement

Tuesday 2nd August

It looks like Roma’s next signing will be Andrea Belotti. Yesterday, Alfredo Pedulla revealed that the striker has accepted the Giallorossi’s offer.

He would be signing a three-year contract worth €2.8m per season plus bonuses.

In turn, he will replace Eldor Shomurodov, who is linked with Bologna but also a few other suitors.

State of play

Monday 1st August

Welcome to the third and final AS Roma transfer news blog of the summer transfer window, which will stay open until the window closes on the first day of September.

Roma have brought in Paulo Dybala, Nemanja Matic, Mile Svilar and Zeki Celik this summer. Work has been continuing on the addition of Georginio Wijnaldum, who should be able to sign this week on loan with an option – becoming an obligation – to buy from PSG, who would be covering around 40% of his salary, it seems.

Another key remaining target is Andrea Belotti, who should be able to join on a free transfer after Eldor Shomurodov moves to Bologna on loan with an option to buy.

Then, Roma will be looking to find a new defender – Eric Bailly, Dan-Axel Zagadou and Japhet Tanganga seem to be on the shortlist – to conclude their incoming business.

There is still space to clear on the roster, so the likes of Jordan Veretout, Amadou Diawara, Carles Perez and more still seem at risk of being sold.

Keep returning to this blog over the next few weeks to see how Roma’s squad is changing.
