Roma transfer blog: All the main rumours for summer 2021 in one place

Sassuolo spy Ciervo

Sunday 29th August

While the bulk of Roma’s focus is on removing unwanted high earners from their squad before the deadline, they are also attracting interest in some of their lesser known talents.

According to SportItalia, Sassuolo are showing an interest in Primavera winger Riccardo Ciervo.

Jose Mourinho called him up for first-team training in pre-season, so it remains to be seen how Roma would respond to any offer.

New goalkeeper link

Saturday 28th August

Somewhat surprisingly, as the deadline approaches, Roma are being linked with a new goalkeeper.

Rui Patricio arrived in the summer as the new number one and has impressed so far. It was thought that Daniel Fuzato would be his deputy, but Roma may have other plans.

According to Serie B News, they are one of three top-flight sides interested in Parma’s Luigi Sepe, who has been pushed down the pecking order following Gianluigi Buffon’s return there.

The 30-year-old, who is married to the niece of former Roma midfielder Carmine Gautieri, could provide competition for Patricio. However, Inter Milan and Sampdoria are also keen – although the latter would struggle with his wages, which would in contrast be relatively cheap for Roma.

It seems a surprise link at this stage of the window, but with youngster Pietro Boer currently the third-choice goalkeeper, perhaps there could be a late shuffle of the hierarchy.

Break in Borja Mayoral deal?

Friday 27th August

Jose Mourinho has already unexpectedly lost one striker this summer and there is a chance he could lose another.

The coach has made a point of having three strikers in the squad, but one of them, Borja Mayoral, is yet to feature in the opening three games.

With Tammy Abraham and Eldor Shomurodov seemingly blocking his opportunities, AS believe Real Madrid want to cancel the remaining year of Mayoral’s loan.

Roma opted not to activate their option to buy this summer, instead keeping him on loan for another year. It was thought they were waiting to assess his progress, but when they spent €60m on two other strikers, perhaps some doubts were raised.

Madrid could recall him and sell him elsewhere, such as Fiorentina or Crystal Palace.

Zan Celar sold

Friday 27th August

A minor outgoing for Roma – former Primavera product and one-time first-team player Zan Celar has been sold to Lugano.

Herrera-Villar swap?

Friday 27th August

A new name has emerged in Roma’s scramble for a new central midfielder: Hector Herrera.

According to Sky Sport, there are talks – though not advanced – open between Roma and Atletico Madrid for the Mexican.

There is also the possibility that Roma would send Gonzalo Villar in the opposite direction.

English move for Nzonzi?

Friday 27th August

Time is running out for Roma to offload Steven Nzonzi, one of their flop signings from the Monchi era. He has so far refused a number of destinations.

According to Il Tempo, the latest interest is coming from Watford, who could take him back to England after previous spells with Blackburn Rovers and Stoke City.

Al-Rayyan look at Pastore

Thursday 26th August

It remains essential for Roma to remove Javier Pastore from the club, with the relationship between the two parties rapidly deteriorating.

The often-injured attacking midfielder wants to be paid off from his contract to join another club, but Roma are unhappy after he travelled to Paris without authorisation recently.

It is believed there is a club interested in him, which TeleRadioStereo and PagineRomaniste journalist David Moresco indicates could be Al-Rayyan. Managed by Laurent Blanc, who coached Pastore at PSG, they also looked at Steven Nzonzi recently without anything going through.

Two new midfielder links

Thursday 26th August

As the transfer deadline approaches, Roma are still having to think about how to strengthen their midfield and are expanding their shortlist.

Two more suggestions have emerged this morning: Cagliari’s Nahitan Nandez and Borussia Dortmund’s Axel Witsel.

According to LaRoma24, Roma have made an enquiry about Nandez, who looks likely to leave the Sardinian side this summer. He had been a target for Inter, but that move will seemingly not be happening.

Roma could yet prise the Uruguay international away via a loan with an option to buy.

Alternatively, Gazzetta Dello Sport propose the name of Witsel, who is in the final year of his contract with Dortmund. Juventus are also looking at the experienced Belgian international, it is claimed.

Fazio to Genoa collapses

Thursday 26th August

Roma’s attempts at offloading Federico Fazio met a false dawn this week. The defender was linked with Genoa, but the move has fallen through.

According to Il Tempo, Fazio would want paying off from the last year of his contract, despite Roma being willing to help Genoa cover his wages for the next two years.

Tiago Pinto has not taken kindly to Fazio’s request and it seems the Argentine will be consigned to sitting out for the final year of his contract.

Milanese makes exit

Wednesday 25th August

As anticipated, Tommaso Milanese has left Roma on loan for Alessandria.

Spalletti sets sights on Villar

Wednesday 25th August

With the transfer deadline approaching, Roma are running out of time to make room for a new midfielder, let alone find one specifically to target. Before they get to that stage, they must sell a current option.

One of the players tipped to make way is Gonzalo Villar, who was inconsistent last season and does not seem to have won over Jose Mourinho.

Sassuolo had expressed an interest earlier in the summer, but now Napoli are looking at a late deal – according to Calciomercato.

Luciano Spalletti, of course a former Roma boss, likes Villar’s qualities and could try to lure him further south.

Loftus-Cheek link

Tuesday 24th August

After adding one English player from Chelsea to their squad in the shape of Tammy Abraham, Roma reportedly have another on their shortlist.

With midfield still a pressing area to reinforce, Calciomercato claim Ruben Loftus-Cheek is among the players Roma are considering.

The Chelsea academy graduate, now 25, has struggled with injuries in recent years, although he built up more regular gametime with Fulham last season during a loan spell.

Milanese set for Alessandria

Tuesday 24th August

One of the players not called up for pre-season this summer was Tommaso Milanese, the Primavera midfielder who scored in last season’s Europa League group stage.

The reasons were unclear, but it quickly developed into a transfer saga. It was thought that Milanese would be sold, perhaps to another side in Serie A.

Instead, Gianluca Di Marzio reveals he is now close to joining Alessandria in Serie B on loan.

Il Tempo‘s respected Roma source Filippo Biafora also confirms the news. He reveals that Tiago Pinto has changed his mind about the player, thus blocking a sale to Sampdoria or Torino. Instead, Roma will lend him to Alessandria with an option for a permanent transfer, although the Giallorossi will retain a buyback clause if they exercise that option.

Coric completes loan exit

Tuesday 24th August

Roma are still struggling to find a permanent buyer for Ante Coric, a 2018 Monchi signing, who has now left on loan again. He will spend the season in Switzerland with FC Zurich.

Progress made for Zakaria

Monday 23rd August

A midfielder remains a priority for Roma as they enter the final week-and-a-bit of the transfer window. To that end, Corriere Dello Sport and Il Messaggero are both reporting progress in their efforts to sign Denis Zakaria.

There were claims on social media over the weekend that it was all but a done deal, which seem to have jumped the gun a bit. However, things are heading in the right direction, with Corriere Dello Sport claiming Roma have agreed personal terms with Zakaria for a four-year contract worth €2m per season.

Il Messaggero also discuss these figures and claim Roma are trying to agree a transfer fee of around €15m, given that the Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder only has one year left on his contract.

Corriere Dello Sport remind that such a signing hinges on Amadou Diawara accepting a way out of Roma. What’s more, Il Messaggero add that the dream of signing Granit Xhaka from Arsenal has not gone away, nor has interest in Lucas Torreira or Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa.

Pastore wants pay-off to leave

Monday 23rd August

Javier Pastore remains a cause of concern for Roma, for whom he is one of the highest earners despite never playing.

Alarmingly, he still has two years left to run on the contract he signed in 2018, which was eyebrow-raising even then given his age and injury history.

Thus, Roma could be stuck with him, unless they can terminate the contract. To do so, though, Il Messaggero claim he would want to receive some compensation.
