Ramos could arrive if Smalling leaves?
Sunday 20th June
Embed from Getty ImagesWith Sergio Ramos confirming his departure from Real Madrid after 16 years, rumours of a move to Roma are bubbling away in the background.
It seems something of a dream, because Ramos commands a high salary and would want Champions League football. However, Jose Mourinho could be a key factor.
According to Gazzetta Dello Sport, Roma still have an outside chance of signing Ramos, despite Mourinho hinting otherwise to talkSPORT. For that to happen, though, Chris Smalling would have to leave first – with Everton still eyeing him up.
Santon asks for release
Saturday 19th June
Embed from Getty ImagesAfter releasing several players at the end of their contracts, Roma are now at work to get rid of unwanted players still on the books.
According to Corriere Dello Sport, Tiago Pinto has informed a group of fringe players that if they do not leave, they will have to train separately rather than be involved in Jose Mourinho’s first training camp.
Struggling to find buyers for these players could be a problem, though. As such, it is claimed that Davide Santon has asked to be released from his contract one year early.
Martinez to replace Smalling?
Saturday 19th June
Embed from Getty ImagesWith Chris Smalling being linked with a return to England with Everton, Roma might need to sign a replacement at centre-back.
According to Il Romanista, one name on their radar is Lisandro Martinez, who they came up against when playing Ajax in last season’s Europa League.
He would cost at least €25m, so Roma have some alternatives in mind as well, including Matija Nastasic of Schalke and German Pezzella of Fiorentina, who could be involved in a swap deal for Cengiz Under.
Rennes pass up Nzonzi option
Saturday 19th June
Embed from Getty ImagesRoma would have been hoping to raise some funds by selling players who were out on loan last season, but are facing difficulties doing so.
PSG seem to have abandoned Alessandro Florenzi in favour of pursuing Achraf Hakimi, Justin Kluivert may return to Roma from RB Leipzig to work with Jose Mourinho, and now Steven Nzonzi also faces an uncertain future.
The 2018 signing has been out on loan with Rennes for the last 18 months, but according to L’Equipe, the Ligue 1 outfit will not be buying the World Cup winner permanently. It comes as something of a surprise, given how much he played for them last season.
Roma will have to find a different solution for the player, whose contract runs until 2022. According to O Jogo, that may be at Benfica – possibly for free.
Spinazzola on Real radar?
Thursday 17th June
Embed from Getty ImagesRoma do not have many representatives at Euro 2020, but one of the few at the tournament is doing himself proud.
Leonardo Spinazzola has been a standout player for Italy in their first two group matches and is now attracting glances from across Europe.
According to AS, there has been a meeting between Spinazzola’s agent and representatives of Real Madrid over a potential move to the Bernabeu for the wing-back if Marcelo leaves Los Blancos.
Those claims have been refuted by ReteSport but backed up by Nicolo Schira.
Borja Mayoral could come into the equation if any negotiations were to advance, as Madrid could use the forward, on loan at Roma with an option to buy for €20m, as a bargaining chip.
But Roma will be hoping this is mere speculation and Spinazzola will stay.
Three more goalkeeper options
Thursday 17th June
Embed from Getty ImagesRoma’s extensive list of goalkeeper targets is expanding all the time, with Il Messaggero recently listing three alternatives to Rui Patricio, who remains an option but seems to be fading in terms of priority.
Pierluigi Gollini of Atalanta (pictured above) remains in contention, but would cost €20m. In addition, Walter Benitez of Nice and Emil Audero of Sampdoria have been offered by their agents – although Roma do not seem so responsive to those names just yet.
Douglas Luiz a Xhaka alternative
Wednesday 16th June
Embed from Getty ImagesRoma have had a €15m bid for Granit Xhaka rejected by Arsenal, so seem to be reminding the Gunners that they do have alternatives as well.
According to the BBC, one of those is Douglas Luiz, who has impressed for Aston Villa in recent months.
Navas a new name for in goal
Wednesday 16th June
Embed from Getty ImagesRoma seem to have paused their pursuit of Wolves goalkeeper Rui Patricio in favour of other ideas.
One of those, according to ESPN, could be PSG’s Keylor Navas, who will be unsettled at the French side if they sign Gianluigi Donnarumma.
The obstacle for Roma would be Navas’ €7m salary.
Icardi offered to Roma?
Tuesday 15th June
Embed from Getty ImagesA new striker is a priority for Roma, even though Edin Dzeko could stay as a backup. Andrea Belotti has been the main name suggested so far, but Mauro Icardi seems to have swooped back into contention.
According to TeleRadioStereo, intermediaries have offered the Argentine firebrand to Roma, Juventus or AC Milan. Play Roma have also indicated that Icardi could end up being Roma’s next number nine.
Everton eye Smalling
Tuesday 15th June
Embed from Getty ImagesAfter much anticipation, the 2020-21 season did not go to plan for Chris Smalling following his permanent transfer from Manchester United. Just one year later, he is being linked with a move back to England.
According to La Roma 24, Everton have revived their interest in the centre-back, who Roma would have to receive around €15m for before selling.
Roger Ibanez’s future is also in doubt as one defender is expected to leave, but Smalling seems more likely at this stage.
Loan could lead to Ake deal
Tuesday 15th June
Embed from Getty ImagesNathan Ake appears to be rising up Roma’s defensive shortlist all the time. The Manchester City defender found little space at the Etihad Stadium last season and could be the man to fill the void in the Giallorossi backline.
Corriere Dello Sport add weight to the rumours, suggesting that Roma could try to take the Dutchman on loan with an option to buy.
Under takes Fiorentina fancy
Tuesday 15th June
Embed from Getty ImagesAfter featuring against Italy for Turkey at Euro 2020, Cengiz Under’s club future is back in focus. The winger has not progressed as expected in recent years and may be sold permanently by Roma after a disappointing loan at Leicester.
According to Sky Sport Italia, one of Under’s admirers is Fiorentina, who are looking for new wingers for incoming coach Gennaro Gattuso.
Fonte on a free?
Monday 14th June

Someone who could fill the void as a backup is Jose Fonte. According to La Voix Du Nord, the ex-Southampton man is considering his options after being unsatisfied with Lille’s latest contract offer and Roma could be a potential suitor.
He is now 37 years old, but still played a key part in Lille’s Ligue 1 title success.
