Roma transfer news blog: All the main rumours for January 2022

The 2022 winter transfer window was open from January 3rd to the 31st, and you could keep up to date with all the latest Roma transfer news here.

Roma had some unfinished business from the summer that they were seeking to rectify mid-season. Their priorities were to find a new central midfielder and a new right-back; they signed Ainsley Maitland-Niles to cover both roles and Sergio Oliveira as a specialist for the former.

Below, you could follow all the latest updates on Roma transfer news.

Diawara rejects Venezia; mercato looks to be over

Monday 31st January

There was a glimmer of hope going into deadline day that Roma would be able to offload Amadou Diawara and bring in a better, more defensive midfielder.

But it now looks unlikely to happen, with Sky Sport among the sources confirming he has rejected a move to Venezia. Elsewhere, it is reported that he is no longer of interest to Valencia.

Thus, it seems Roma will be done there for their January business.

Amadou Diawara latest

Sunday 30th January

Will Roma get rid of him in time? It’s starting to look less likely, but there has been a range of interest building in Amadou Diawara.

He was linked with Cagliari in a potential swap of loans with Nahitan Nandez, until the latter got close to Juventus. It was then confirmed by Teleradiostereo that a deal for the Sardinians is off.

Then, Gianluca Di Marzio revealed that Venezia also want Diawara on loan, but a deal is difficult at this stage.

And as long as that remains the case, Roma will struggle to sign anyone else in defensive midfield.

Late interest in Darboe

Sunday 30th January

An alternative candidate to Diawara to make way from Roma’s midfield before the deadline – to build experience – is Ebrima Darboe.

Just like his fellow African, Darboe has been linked with Cagliari and Salernitana (as per Teleradiostereo), and Venezia (as per Il Messaggero).

He would only be allowed to leave if Diawara stays, though.

Roma transfer news: Fazio finally leaves

Saturday 29th January

It risked turning ugly but it finally happened – Federico Fazio has officially left Roma.

Valencia’s Diawara deal paving way for further business?

Saturday 29th January

It appears Roma have found a taker for Amadou Diawara, with multiple sources now putting Valencia in the lead to sign him.

His departure should clear Roma to target a new midfielder in the last few days of the transfer window. It could be top summer target Granit Xhaka, back on the club’s radar after a failed move from Arsenal six months ago – but there are plenty of options.

Diawara’s exit will not just help Roma reinforce in his position, but could also lead to future business between the club and Valencia. According to Sky Sport, they will explore a swap deal between Carles Perez and Goncalo Guedes in the summer.

Ciervo completes new exit

Salernitana signing Fazio

Thursday 27th January

Roma may finally have found an answer in their efforts to offload Federico Fazio. According to Sky Sport, he is set to join Salernitana.

Walter Sabatini signed him for Roma and is currently working for the relegation-threatened side, who are now reportedly going to welcome him for a medical.

Fazio has apparently agreed terms with Salernitana, but still must find an exit agreement with Roma as the final hurdle.

Danilo to add to Portuguese contingent?

Thursday 27th January

In the summer, Roma appointed Jose Mourinho as head coach and signed Rui Patricio to be their first-choice goalkeeper, before bringing in midfielder Sergio Oliveira on loan in January.

All three Portuguese men have made a good impression, so there are rumours they could be joined by another comaptriot.

With Roma still searching for a defensive midfielder – since Oliveira is thriving in a box-to-box role – Il Romanista report that they have been offered the chance to sign Danilo Pereira from PSG.

The French giants want to take reported Roma target Tanguy Ndombele on loan from Tottenham, but need to clear space to do so.

Danilo could therefore make way, but Roma also need to offload before they can add. With that in mind, Tiago Pinto will meet with Amadou Diawara and his representatives – following Guinea’s elimination from the African Cup of Nations – in a bid to convince him to leave.

Roma in Bailly battle

Tuesday 25th January

Roma may yet take the opportunity to sign a new defender if they can in what remains of the winter window.

According to Foot Mercato, they are lurking behind Milan in the race to take Eric Bailly on loan from Manchester United.

Jose Mourinho previously signed Bailly when with the English club, but Milan’s pursuit is more advanced.

Late Xhaka attempt?

Tuesday 25th January

Dominating Roma transfer news over the summer was Jose Mourinho’s attempts to get the club to sign Granit Xhaka.

It ultimately never came off, but the Arsenal midfielder remains of interest. And Calciomercato even think there could be a late attempt to snatch him on loan this month.

Roma already took Ainsley Maitland-Niles on the same terms from the same club, but with Xhaka failing to justify Arsenal’s decision to keep him, there is an outside chance of the Swiss international following the Englishman.

Still, Sky Sport insist it could be something more likely revisited in the summer, rather than this week.

Alternatives to Xhaka listed by Calciomercato include Xeka of Lille, Florian Grillitsch of Hoffenheim and Ever Banega of Al Shabab (see below).

Ever Banega back to Serie A?

Tuesday 25th January

A couple of sources are reporting this morning that Roma may have a chance to bring Ever Banega back to Serie A.

The former Inter midfielder starred for Sevilla when they won the Europa League in 2020, before leaving for Saudi Arabian side Al Shabab.

Banega could be bound for a European return, though, with Corriere Dello Sport and Gazzetta Dello Sport both revealing his agent has met with Tiago Pinto.

Any deal would be complicated by his wages and would likely hinge on Amadou Diawara being able to leave the club. His Guinea side have just been knocked out of the African Cup of Nations.

Feature: Forgettable January signings

Monday 24th January

Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Sergio Oliveira have made decent starts to life at Roma after winter moves so far, but it hasn’t always worked out for some of those that came before.

Roma to retain Perez and Zalewski

Sunday 23rd January

Two of the fringe wingers in Roma’s squad to have been linked with exits are Carles Perez and Nicola Zalewski.

But Corriere Dello Sport write that neither will be leaving the club this month. Roma have in fact blocked any loan exit for Perez and Jose Mourinho has also prompted them to end any negotiations to offload Zalewski to Sampdoria.

Santamaria becomes Kamara alternative

Sunday 23rd January

It has been reported that Roma’s pursuit of Marseille midfielder Boubacar Kamara is grinding to a halt. Il Tempo, who were the first to reveal the Giallorossi’s interest, now say the track has frozen due to the competition for his signature and high wage requests.

An alternative may still be useful, leading La Repubblica to mention Baptiste Santamaria as a new target.

He also plays in Ligue 1, for Rennes, whom he joined in the summer. He has played plenty for them, but could be open to another new challenge at the age of 26.

But a deal would have to wait until the end of the season, anyway.

Mallorca make Carles Perez approach

Thursday 20th January

Carles Perez could start for Roma in their Coppa Italia clash with Lecce tonight, but his future with the club remains uncertain.

According to Il Messaggero, Mallorca have asked to take him on loan to aid their battle against relegation from La Liga.

Roma would want an obligation to buy in any deal to send Perez away, or else they would keep him until the end of the season themselves.

De Frutos an idea in attack

Wednesday 19th January

After the departure of Borja Mayoral, Roma may need another attacker – but not necessarily an out-and-out centre-forward.

According to Tuttomercatoweb, they are in a race for Levante attacker Jorge De Frutos, who can play as a winger or attacking midfielder, or a number nine.

Hellas Verona have also been showing an interest.

Mourinho eyes Moutinho?

Tuesday 18th January

Jose Mourinho commented in the aftermath of Roma’s win over Cagliari that he would like more players in the mould of January signing Sergio Oliveira, whose debut goal from the penalty spot sealed the win.

Now, Paolo Rocchetti of TeleRadioStereo is reporting that the coach has his eyes on another veteran midfielder – his near namesake Joao Moutinho of Wolves.

In his mid-30s, the Portuguese player could become available in the final days of the transfer window. It would depend on Roma being able to offload Amadou Diawara, linked with Galatasaray (see below).

Sabatini eyes Santon for Salernitana

Tuesday 18th January

Roma still have two players away from the first-team group, Davide Santon and Federico Fazio. Coincidentally, both have been linked with Salernitana.

Each is under contract until the end of the season, but contract cancellations could allow them to leave for the Serie A strugglers, where ex-Roma sporting director Walter Sabatini is now getting involved.

Fazio seems less inclined to, but full-back Santon is on Salernitana’s radar if he can rescind his Roma deal, according to Calciomercato.

Galatasaray return for Diawara

Tuesday 18th January

One rumour that was in Roma transfer news going back to the summer was that of a potential exit for Amadou Diawara in the direction of Galatasaray.

According to Spor, the Turkish side are now looking at the Guinean midfielder, who has fallen out of favour over the past year or so.

He is currently away on African Cup of Nations duty, but will be a priority for Galatasaray when he returns to Rome.

Tottenham turn to Veretout

Tuesday 18th January

Jordan Veretout may be about to lose his place as a regular starter for Roma in midfield. Meanwhile, a few clubs are being linked with him.

According to Il Tempo, he has become of interest to Tottenham, while Napoli remain keen.

Sampdoria look into Zalewski loan

Tuesday 18th January

Nicola Zalewski is one of the main prospects at Roma’s disposal, but he hasn’t had too many chances this season. Therefore, the Poland international could be a loan target for Sampdoria.

A couple of sources, starting with Tuttosport, have suggested Samp are asking about a loan deal for the winger.

Reynolds exit complicates

Monday 17th January

Roma have been trying to offload Bryan Reynolds on loan this month and the likely destination appeared to be Anderlecht. However, SportItalia are now reporting the deal is encountering difficulties.

In the meantime, Fabrizio Romano claims the American could end up elsewhere in Belgium, with Kortrijk.

Anderlecht deliberate Darboe move

Saturday 15th January

Roma are close to sending Bryan Reynolds to Anderlecht, but the American is not the only member of Jose Mourinho’s squad that the Belgians have their eyes on.

Il Romanista have reported that Anderlecht are also looking at midfield starlet Ebrima Darboe.

The Gambian came into the first team towards the end of last season but hasn’t had many chances to progress since, despite Mourinho rating his potential.

Any exit would therefore also likely be a loan.

Santon to terminate contract?

Saturday 15th January

Still separate from the main squad, Davide Santon faces a future away from Roma. However, it remains unclear where he will end up.

Still, Roma are working to resolve his contract six months early by paying him off, according to Nicolo Schira. The club are negotiating about a severance pay.

Smalling switch suggested

Thursday 13th January

Chris Smalling has rediscovered a role of importance for Roma when available this season. However, doubts over his vaccination status could affect his eligibility in upcoming weeks.

And there are now doubts about his overall Roma future. According to TeleRadioStereo, Smalling has become an option for Newcastle back in the Premier League as they aim to strengthen their own defence.

Attention turns to the defence

Thursday 13th January

With two players brought in who can cover in midfield, Roma are now considering strengthening their defence.

According to Il Romanista, they ideally want someone who can play at centre-back and in midfield, like Boubacar Kamara.

But if they choose a specialist centre-half, their options would include Gleison Bremer of Torino (who is too expensive), Marcos Senesi of Feyenoord, Malang Sarr of Chelsea or Maxime Esteve of Montpellier.

It’s official – Roma have signed Sergio Oliveira from Porto on an initial loan deal.

Mourinho makes Ndombele call

Wednesday 12th January

Midfield links continue to dominate Roma transfer news. One player who remains on the club’s radar appears to be Tanguy Ndombele.

He is facing an uncertain future at Tottenham, where he was recently booed off the pitch by supporters. Antonio Conte has refused to give anything away about his future.

Jose Mourinho previously worked with Ndombele in north London. Although they had a rocky relationship at first, they eventually got on the same page.

So much so, that they could consider working together again. According to Telefoot 1, Mourinho has made a phone call to Ndombele to see about his situation.

Napoli are also interested in the former Lyon ace, whose high wages would be the main stumbling block to any deal. But either side could prise him away from Tottenham on loan, despite their preference for a permanent deal.

Gigot linked for the defence

Wednesday 12th January

News emerged yesterday from that Roma have their eyes on a new, low-cost centre-back. The player in question is Samuel Gigot.

The Frenchman is out of contract with Spartak Moscow at the end of the season. Roma could therefore take their chance to snap up the 28-year-old.

Calafiori close to Genoa

Tuesday 11th January

With Leonardo Spinazzola nearing a return to group training for Roma, there will soon be even less space for Riccardo Calafiori.

The young left-back looks likely to leave on loan, then. Cagliari were expected to take him, but there has been a late twist.

Instead, he will now be heading to Genoa on a dry loan, as reported by Gianluca Di Marzio.

Tuesday 11th January

It was recently reported that Borja Mayoral could leave Roma to return to Spain with Getafe. Now, Tele Radio Stereo are confirming that his teammate Gonzalo Villar, yet to feature in Serie A this season, could make the same move.

Al Hilal eye Fazio

Tuesday 11th January

Six months remain until Roma will release Federico Fazio from his contract, but they continue working on a possible premature exit.

Not part of the first-team group any more, Fazio needs to find a solution. According to Calciomercato Report, Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia are looking into his potential transfer.

Sokratis switch suggested

Tuesday 11th January

If finances allow, it may be beneficial for Roma to sign a more experienced centre-back in January.

In that regard, the Daily Express are linking the Giallorossi with former Arsenal defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos.

The Greece international could leave Olympiacos on loan until the end of the season, perhaps.

Mayoral to make Spain return?

Monday 10th January

The latest solution for the Spaniard, according to reports from Tiempo De Juego in his home country, would be to return to La Liga with Getafe.
