Roma make Maitland-Niles their latest English player as Arsenal loan confirmed

Roma have completed the signing of Ainsley Maitland-Niles from Arsenal on loan without an option to buy.

Maitland-Niles joins Roma until the end of the season. In doing so, he becomes the third English player – after Chris Smalling and Tammy Abraham – in the current squad.

Capable of playing in midfield or at right-back, the 24-year-old will provide depth for Roma in the two positions they most wanted to strengthen entering the January transfer window.

Taking the number 15 shirt, Maitland-Niles told asroma.com: “I am just delighted to be here and can’t wait to crack on.

“I want to help the team and show what I can do as a player.

“Thank you to the fans for the support they’ve already shown me. I hope we can go on to do something great by the end of the season.”

With Arsenal since the age of six, this is his third venture away from the English capital after previous loans at Ipswich Town in the 2015-16 season and West Bromwich Albion in the second half of last season.

He has made 11 appearances for Arsenal so far this term, but will now be completing the campaign in Rome.

Pinto welcomes Maitland-Niles to Roma

Tiago Pinto, Roma’s general manager, said: “With Maitland-Niles we are bringing to Roma a young player who fits well with the profile we were looking for to improve the squad and cover a number of different positions.

“When we spoke to Ainsley we were really struck by his enthusiasm about the prospect of joining our group and having the chance to work with Jose Mourinho.”

Maitland-Niles is a five-time England international, with all his caps coming in 2020. Long-term, he will be hoping to mimic Abraham in using his Roma adventure to get back in national contention.

For now, his focus is on helping Roma, where he reunites with former Arsenal teammate Henrikh Mkhitaryan. He could make his debut as early as Sunday, against Juventus.

Maitland-Niles is likely to feature mainly on the right flank as an alternative to Rick Karsdorp for Roma. Overall, though, his versatility in multiple positions could be just what Jose Mourinho has been looking for.

Welcome, Ainsley.
