The draw for the remaining rounds of the Europa League could see Roma play Wolves and Manchester United, if they can beat Sevilla.
Roma will face Sevilla in a one-off match in Germany to determine who advances from their Round of 16 tie. The original fixtures were postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak.
If Roma overcome the Spaniards, they will play the winners of the game between Wolves and Olympiacos in the quarter-final. The duo drew 1-1 in Greece in their first leg.
Those games that only have one leg remaining to play will take place at the designated home venue. Roma, of course, did not play either leg against Sevilla, so will conclude their tie with a single match in Germany – where the latter rounds will take place in a mini-tournament in August.
The Lupi have never played Wolves competitively, but they do share a nickname.
Meanwhile, Olympiacos have former Roma right-back Vasilis Torosidis among their ranks.
Should Roma advance from the quarter-finals, they will have four possible opponents in the semis. Once again, they could face a Premier League side.
Manchester United would arguably be the toughest potential opponent that Roma can face in the semi-finals. The Red Devils would have to beat LASK Linz, whom they have a five-goal advantage over from the first leg, before beating the winners of the clash between Istanbul Basaksehir or FC Copenhagen.
Roma were in the same group as Basaksehir, beating them twice but finishing below them. As for Copenhagen, they have never met the Giallorossi.
Embed from Getty ImagesMan Utd seems to be the most likely opponent, then, if Roma get to the semi-finals. Such a clash would recall memories of the devastating 7-1 defeat Roma suffered at Old Trafford in 2007. But Roma have played United four times since then – never losing by more than a two-goal margin.
If the unthinkable happens and Roma reach the final, they could be involved in an all-Italian matchup with Inter Milan. In fact, Roma faced Inter the only time they have reached the final of this competition previously, when it was the UEFA Cup. They lost over two legs.
Also on the other side of the draw are Scottish side Rangers, Paulo Fonseca’s former club Shakhtar Donetsk, Edin Dzeko’s old team Wolfsburg, and a Bayer Leverkusen team that features Tin Jedvaj, a defender who had a brief spell with Roma early in his career.
The other potential opponents in the final would be Getafe, Eintracht Frankfurt and FC Basel.
Roma’s clash with Sevilla will take place on either the 5th or 6th August. The quarters take place on the 10th or 11th, the semis on the 16th or 17th, and the final in Cologne on the 21st.
What do you think the easiest route to the final would be for #ASRoma? And the hardest? https://t.co/HzjyXDLMRh
