Roma close to confirming agreement to keep Chris Smalling as Man Utd accept deal

Roma have reportedly agreed to sign Chris Smalling from Manchester United after his impressive 2019-20 season.

Smalling has been arguably Roma’s player of the season during his loan from the English club. The centre-back has made more than 30 appearances during his stay in the capital.

There have been concerns recently that Smalling’s stay in Rome would finish at the end of the season. His form has been so good, that it may have priced the Giallorossi out of a permanent deal.

But SportItalia journalist Alfredo Pedulla claims Roma have now agreed to keep Smalling.

The formula of the deal will see Roma extend Smalling’s loan until 2021, for a fee of €3m. The Giallorossi will then be obliged to buy the Englishman for €17m – but they can pay that sum in three installments.

If true, this seems to be a smart way of meeting United’s demands for Smalling, who has been a pivotal player for Roma this season.

Indeed, the 30-year-old has found a home in Italy – with Pedulla adding that Smalling’s desire to stay in Rome has helped the parties come to an agreement.
