Leandro Paredes has left Roma to complete his long-desired return to Argentina with Boca Juniors.
Roma signed Paredes from Boca Juniors back in 2014 and he went on to play 54 times in his first spell with the club, either side of a loan spell with Empoli but heavily weighted to the 2016-17 season.
Paredes was then sold to Zenit Saint Petersburg and had spells with Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus before returning to Roma in 2023.
The midfielder played 49 times in the 2023-24 season and then 32 in 2024-25, although it became clear his heart was set on a return to Boca Juniors partway through his second spell in Rome.
Despite a contract extension until 2026 being triggered in March, Roma have accepted Paredes’ exit after Boca made an offer that could eventually reach the €3.5m value of his release clause.
Paredes leaves Roma with 135 appearances behind him: 54 in his first spell (consisting of 13 before his Empoli loan and 41 after) and 81 in his second. He scored 13 goals for the club (4 in his first spell and 9 in his second, including one in each of his last two appearances for the club at the end of the 2024-25 season).
Only two players have moved directly from Roma to Boca Juniors before: Abel Balbo in 2002 and Daniele De Rossi in 2019.
