The five Roma managers with the most Derby Della Capitale wins

Roma have now won the Derby Della Capitale 69 times in official competitions, courtesy of 29 different victorious head coaches.

But which of those managers have experienced the most derby wins during their time representing Roma?

Here are the top five.

=4. Claudio Ranieri (5)

Claudio Ranieri has dominated many of the headlines after Roma’s 2-0 win over Lazio got 2025 off to a winning start. Now in his third spell in charge of his beloved club, Ranieri has retained a perfect record in derbies.

Ranieri’s short caretaker stint in 2019 for his second spell started after both games against Lazio that season, so he was overseeing his first derby in 14 years, having won all four in his original spell in charge. He made some bold decisions to inspire those results too, such as one occasion when he took Francesco Totti and Daniele De Rossi off at half time before a second-half comeback.

More than a decade later, the now-73-year-old subsequently made history as the first Roma coach to win his first four derbies in Serie A (one of the wins from his original run was in the Coppa Italia) thanks to an impressive win inspired by goals by Lorenzo Pellegrini and Alexis Saelemaekers.

=4. Luigi Barbesino (5)

Only the second Italian to manage Roma, Luigi Barbesino oversaw four seasons in charge of the club before 1933 and 1937.

His first derby in charge was a 5-0 win for Roma, which remains the biggest margin any side has won a derby by. Ernesto Tomasi became the first player to score a hat-trick in the derby in the process.

The next three derbies were draws, but aside from Lazio knocking Roma out of the 1935-36 Coppa Italia in their first ever cup clash, Barbesino won his final four derbies in the league.

=2. Luciano Spalletti (6)

Luciano Spalletti inspired a whole host of emotions over his two spells at Roma, the first lasting between 2005 and 2009 until he made way for Ranieri, and the second being from 2016 to 2017.

During his first spell in charge, Spalletti won three derbies, lost the same amount and drew two. And even though he was only back for 18 months for his second reign, Spalletti managed another five derbies – with another three wins and two defeats.

The first derby of his second spell was a particularly memorable one, as a resurgent Roma won 4-1, representing the most goals they had scored in a game against Lazio since 2002.

=2. Nils Liedholm (6)

It should come as little surprise that Roma’s greatest ever leader was one of their most successful in derbies too. Nils Liedholm led the club across four spells and was famously the man to lead them to their second Scudetto in 1983 and the European Cup final the year after.

After arriving in 1973, Liedholm failed to win any of the three derbies in his debut season – but he responded emphatically by overseeing three victories out of three against Roma’s rivals in his second season. There would be a fourth and final derby win of his first, four-year reign at the last time of asking in 1977.

When Liedholm returned in 1979, the first derby of the season was a draw and the second was his fifth win. Lazio were relegated at the end of that season, so there would be no derby in Roma’s Scudetto season. But when the Biancocelesti returned to the top flight for the following season, Liedholm led the Serie A champions to a 2-0 win upon their reunion, before the second derby of the season finished as a draw.

Sadly, there were no further derby wins for Liedholm in either of his two subsequent spells in charge of Roma (although once again, part of that timeframe clashed with a period when Lazio were in Serie B!).

1. Fabio Capello (7)

Still out in front as the leading winner of derbies (for either rival) is Fabio Capello, who claimed seven wins over Lazio between 1999 and 2004. In actual fact, Capello only lost once in 12 derbies.

His first was a 4-1 win in November 1999 (from which the picture above is taken), thanks to braces from strikers Marco Delvecchio and Vincenzo Montella. Lazio won the next derby that season – and the Scudetto – but Roma bounced back emphatically.

In 2000-01, Roma wrestled the title into their own hands for the third time in their history, with the 1-0 win over Lazio (whose Paolo Negro scored an own goal) becoming an all-time derby highlight along the way.

And the following season, in March 2002, there was the famous 5-1 win including a four-goal haul by Montella and a sublime goal by Francesco Totti.

A year later, Capello led Roma to the Coppa Italia final thanks to a two-legged win over Lazio in the semi-final, before winning 2-0 and drawing 1-1 in the derbies in his final season.
