Sassuolo v Roma Women preview: Third time lucky for opening day win?

Roma kick off their third season in women’s football on Sunday, when they travel to face Sassuolo.

It’s a repeat of their first ever fixture in Serie A Femminile, which Roma lost 3-2. In fact, the Giallorosse lost their opening fixture last year too, against Milan, so will be hoping to make a winning start for the first time ever.

There is optimism that Roma can make an impression in their third season. Having been on course for an improved points tally before their second season was cut short, they are ready to finish what they started.

Importantly, Roma have retained most of their squad from last season, as well as coach Betty Bavagnoli.

The main signings Roma have made are goalkeeper Rachele Baldi, defender Osinachi Ohale and striker Paloma Lazaro. Overall, though, there should be plenty of familiar names in action.

Andressa Alves has returned to training after being in quarantine, so should be available for selection. She was one of Roma’s most important players last season.

So too was striker Lindsey Thomas, who told Gazzetta Dello Sport this week that she would like to win a trophy with Roma this season. Last year, she was the side’s top scorer, so her form will be crucial to those hopes.

Other key players to have stayed are captain Elisa Bartoli, number 10 Manuela Giugliano, and all-time top scorer Annamaria Serturini – who has netted Roma’s first goal in both of their previous campaigns. The winger will be hoping to make it three in a row.

It has been half a year since Roma last played competitively, so they will be hoping to regain their momentum. They won their last five games of the previous season.

The game kicks off at 7:45pm UK time (8:45 in Italy). Fans in Italy can watch it on Roma TV, while those abroad can view it on Twitter or Roma TV+.
