Inter v Roma Women preview: Rescheduled match set for Saturday

Roma Women will play their rescheduled game against Inter Milan on Saturday afternoon, looking for a first win since the international break.

This fixture was meant to be held a couple of weeks ago as Roma’s reintroduction to action following the pause for international matches. However, Covid-19 cases in the Inter camp pushed it back to Saturday.

Since the original date for the match, Roma have lost to Juventus and drawn with AC Milan in two clashes with title challengers. Inter do not have quite the same pedigree in women’s football, but after appointing successful ex-Juventus boss Rita Guarino as their new manager in the summer, their ambitions are growing too. Thus, this will be a good marker of where Roma are at.

Last season, Roma drew this fixture 1-1 away from home, before winning the return match 4-3 – a game memorable for the overhead kick that brought up the now-departed Marija Banusic’s only goal for the club.

The prior year – Inter’s first since promotion to Serie A – Roma won away 4-1 before the home match was cancelled amid the pandemic. Hence, from three attempts, the Giallorosse have never lost to their hosts for Saturday.

Just one point separates the two sides in the table, though – Roma have 10 and Inter nine – so this could be the closest meeting between the two sides yet.

For Roma, Giada Greggi could make her 50th appearance for her hometown team, while Allyson Swaby could bring up a half-century of Serie A appearances.

Interestingly, Roma’s last six goals have all been scored by different players, so the identities of the potential difference makers against Inter remain to be seen.

Goals haven’t necessarily been flowing for Inter either, although striker Gloria Marinelli will be a threat; she has three to her name so far. Another opponent to be aware of is ex-Roma midfielder Flaminia Simonetti.

Inter have lost their last two matches in a row without scoring – including a defeat to promoted outfit Pomigliano and newcomers Sampdoria – so are clearly still a work in progress. In all fairness, the last couple of weeks have shown that Alessandro Spugna’s Roma are too.

It makes for an exciting battle when the two teams take to the pitch on Saturday at 1:30pm UK time.

Roma’s squad for the game is as follows: Baldi, Ceasar, Ghioc; Bartoli, Di Gugliemo, Soffia, Linari, Swaby, Pettenuzzo, Pacioni; Bernauer, Ciccotti, Giugliano, Greggi, Thaisa, Andressa; Lazaro, Pirone, Serturini, Glionna, Vigliucci, Corelli.
