Henrikh Mkhitaryan has finally signed a contract extension with Roma to keep him at the club for another season.
Mkhitaryan made his loan move from Arsenal permanent last summer, but only signed an initial one-year deal with a clause for an extension. He met the conditions for that to materialise well before the season ended, but held off signing the contract.
Roma were starting to worry that they would lose their most influential player of last season as a free agent and had set him a deadline to respond to their offer. But finally, the good news has arrived.
They may well find themselves in a similar situation next year, as his new contract only runs until 2022, but for now they can breathe a sigh of relief.
Mkhitaryan previously had a strained relationship with incoming Roma boss Jose Mourinho at Manchester United, but the Portuguese coach has clearly won the Armenian midfielder over again and will be counting on him next season.
“Over the last two years at Roma I’ve fallen in love, both with the club and the city, thanks in large part to the incredible passion of the fans,” Mkhitaryan told the club website.
“The club’s ambitions are very high and I am proud to have the chance to play my part as we take on all the challenges that await us next season. Daje Roma!”
The 32-year-old has made 73 appearances and scored 23 goals during his time with the club so far.
