Roma delay decision on Borja Mayoral transfer after first year of loan

Roma will not activate their option to buy Borja Mayoral this summer, instead keeping him on loan for another year, it has been revealed.

Mayoral arrived from Real Madrid last summer on a two-year loan, with an option to buy for €15m in 2021 or €20m in 2022.

Despite a positive debut season in which he scored 17 goals, the jury is still out on the Spanish striker. Thus, with Roma potentially needing to invest elsewhere this summer, they have decided against buying him for the cheaper price, according to Il Tempo’s Filippo Biafora.

Mayoral will get another chance to prove himself next season before Roma make their final decision. However, it may be tough for him, as Jose Mourinho wants to work with Edin Dzeko and potentially bring in a third striker for competition.

But Mayoral did relatively well amid lesser expectations in 2020-21 and will hope to do so again in 2021-22.
