Aston Villa announce permanent signing of Robin Olsen from Roma

Robin Olsen has finally left Roma on a permanent basis after four loan spells away from the club, signing for Aston Villa.

Olsen was Roma’s number one during the 2018-19 season but was no match for predecessor Alisson Becker. In fact, he lost his place to the veteran Antonio Mirante by the end of that campaign.

The Swedish international never played for the club again, enduring loan spells with Cagliari, Everton, Sheffield United and Aston Villa.

One year ahead of the end of his Roma contract, a permanent solution has finally been found for Olsen. Villa have bought him after he made one appearance for them between his January move and the end of the 2021-22 season.

Their option to buy was worth €3.5m.

Olsen, now 32, made 35 appearances for Roma, but let in 58 goals during his sole season guarding the goal. He only kept seven clean sheets and was part of a squad that finished sixth.

Roma ended up in the same position this season, but got there with a much more reliable number one, Rui Patricio – who will soon be joined by Mile Svilar as his backup.
