Roma Women have become the champions of Italy for the first time in their history.
A 2-1 win over Fiorentina on Saturday afternoon confirmed Roma have won Serie A Femminile for the 2022-23 season after opening up an insurmountable lead over defending champions Juventus.
Juventus had won the previous five editions of Serie A Femminile, but Roma beat them 3-2 last weekend to move within touching distance of toppling them from the throne.
And goals from Rome-born midfielder Giada Greggi and club captain Elisa Bartoli – either side of one from former player Milica Mijatovic – were enough for Roma to wrap up the league title with three games to spare.
This is Roma’s fifth season in women’s football; they have previously finished fourth (twice), fifth and second in Serie A Femminile.
Alessandro Spugna’s side have led the way in the table for most of the current season and it has culminated in them winning the Scudetto.
They still have plenty to play for this season, since a Coppa Italia final against Juventus awaits on 4th June.
Next season, they will be in the Women’s Champions League for the second consecutive season.
But for now, it will all be about celebrating their outstanding achievement of becoming the champions of Italy.
