Roma Women have signed one of their most high-profile players yet after announcing the arrival of Vicky Losada from Manchester City.
Losada, a full Spain international and former Barcelona captain, will be with Roma until the end of the season, providing crucial experience as they aim to stay top of Serie A Femminile, while also competing in the knockout phase of the Champions League.
The latter is a competition Losada has won with Barcelona before, lifting the trophy as captain in 2021.
She enjoyed three spells with the Catalan club, also spending time with Espanyol earlier in her career. Losada has also played in the USA with Western New York and her final spell with Barcelona was sandwiched in between stints in the WSL with Arsenal and then Manchester City.
Now, the 65-cap Spain international (who represented her country at the 2019 Women’s World Cup and was in their squad for the 2022 European Championships, without playing) has moved to Serie A for the first time, adding her experience to an already strong Roma squad.
Taking the number 14 shirt, the midfielder told the club website: “I am delighted to be here. I can’t wait to make my debut and begin to meet the fans and explore this city.
“I come here eager to get started. There are so many targets that we want to achieve together.”
Head of Women’s Football, Betty Bavagnoli, added: “We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Vicky to Roma, a player we had identified as a top target.
“Her experience, leadership and quality on the ball will provide great examples to some of our young players and will play a pivotal role in the continued growth of our squad.”
In total, Losada won six league titles with Barcelona and 17 other honours. At Arsenal, she won the FA Women’s Cup and the WSL Cup, going on to lift the latter again with Manchester City last season.
Losada was yet to start a WSL match in the 2022-23 season, so the 31-year-old will be hoping to get back up to speed in Rome, where she may be able to express her undoubted quality.
Benvenuta, Vicky.
