Roma could only draw with the 10 men of Venezia in their penultimate match of the Serie A season.
The visitors, bottom of the league, opened the scoring inside a minute through David Okereke. They then went down to 10 men when Sofian Kiyine was sent off just after the half hour.
Roma made some changes at the break, including the withdrawal of Leonardo Spinazzola, who was making his first start since his return from a lengthy injury.
One of the later introductions, Eldor Shomurodov, would score an equaliser for Roma in the last 15 minutes. His first Serie A goal of 2022, it ended a long drought.
But Roma could not claim all three points and instead will be watching results elsewhere in the race for Europe.
