Shomurodov strike not enough for Roma as 2021 ends with Sampdoria draw

Roma headed into the winter break in underwhelming fashion after being held to a 1-1 draw by Sampdoria.

Eldor Shomurodov put some personal frustrations behind him with the opening goal in the second half, but Sampdoria equalised through Manolo Gabbiadini in the final 10 minutes.

Shomurodov’s goal saw him take a few bites of the cherry before finding the bottom corner. It was his first Serie A goal for Roma at Stadio Olimpico.

But his teammates at the other end of the pitch let themselves down when Gabbiadini reacted to a rebound and finished from close range.

It means Roma failed to build momentum from their weekend win over Atalanta and slip to sixth in the Serie A table.

Even so, they remain four games unbeaten across all competitions.

Next up will be AC Milan on January 6th as the second half of the season commences.
