Marseille announce agreement in principle to take Pau Lopez on loan from Roma

Marseille have confirmed they have found an agreement in principle with Roma for the loan of Pau Lopez in the 2021-22 season, with a view to a permanent deal.

The Spaniard became Roma’s most expensive goalkeeper of all time when joining from Real Betis in 2019, but has struggled for consistency in his two seasons with the club.

He sometimes lost his place as the starter to either Antonio Mirante or Daniel Fuzato, but a late resurgence in the 2020-21 season was ended by an injury. Now, he is set to play his first football since recovering away from Roma.

Marseille will have the option to buy Lopez permanently at the end of the 2021-22 season. Some reports have suggested that will become an obligation to buy after a certain number of appearances.

The Ligue 1 side confirmed that Roma had granted them permission to negotiate a contract with Lopez, who will follow Cengiz Under to the Velodrome after the winger made a similar move recently.

Roma’s main target to replace Lopez as number one is Rui Patricio, who could arrive soon. An agreement has reportedly been found with Wolves for his transfer, while personal terms will not be a problem.

Several reports have indicated that Patricio’s agent, Jorge Mendes, has arrived in Rome to finalise the deal.
