Henrikh Mkhitaryan makes Inter Milan move official after leaving Roma

Henrikh Mkhitaryan has left Roma on a free transfer after three seasons to complete a move to Inter Milan.

Mkhitaryan was weighing up a renewal offer from Roma and a contract tabled by Inter as the end of his current deal approached. Ultimately, he opted to move on.

The attacking midfielder joined Roma on loan from Arsenal in 2019. He scored on his debut against Sassuolo, one of nine goals he contributed (there were also six assists) from 27 appearances that season.

By the end of it, Roma managed to secure Mkhitaryan’s services on a permanent basis, via a free transfer. He signed a one-year contract, during which he contributed 15 goals and 13 assists from 46 games. As a result, he was named Giallorossi Yorkshire’s player of the season for 2020-21.

Then, Mkhitaryan’s future was in doubt when Roma appointed Jose Mourinho, with whom he had clashed at Manchester United, as their next manager. Despite this, the pair put their differences to one side and the Armenian committed for another campaign in the capital.

Throughout it, he adapted his role to that of a central midfielder in a 3-5-2 formation. Although not as impactful in the final third, he brought substance and consistency to the middle of the pitch.

Mkhitaryan played 44 times in the 2021-22 season, scoring five times and making nine assists. His last appearance was in the Europa Conference League final, although the injury he had worked hard to shake off ended up forcing him to withdraw in the first half.

Nevertheless, he had played his part in Roma’s first UEFA trophy win. But that was to be the end of his stint with the club.

Roma had been working on a renewal offer for the 33-year-old. However, Serie A runners-up Inter wanted to convince him to choose them instead.

Along the way, Mkhitaryan lost his agent, when Mino Raiola died in April 2022. In the weeks that followed, negotiations continued to determine his client’s future.

The decision arrived on June 3rd, when various reports broke the news that Mkhitaryan had rejected Roma’s renewal offer in favour of the superior terms on offer by Inter.

He went on to complete a medical with Inter on June 22nd before his contract with his new club was deposited to Serie A on July 1st.

Due to his status as a free agent, Roma will not receive any money for the transfer. But given the terms on which they signed him originally, the financial implications are not the concern here.

Instead, Roma will have to find a way to replace Mkhitaryan’s quality and consistency in central midfield. They will likely be in the market to reinforce a department that needed strengthening anyway.

Mkhitaryan concludes his Roma career with 29 goals and 28 assists from 117 appearances, including 27 and 22 respectively from 87 games in Serie A. Borussia Dortmund are the only club he has represented more during his career.

But now he will be lining up against Roma as an Inter player from next season.

Grazie, Micki.
