Davide Santon reaches end of Roma contract after a year frozen out

Roma are unsurprisingly releasing Davide Santon at the end of his contract on June 30th following a season on the sidelines.

Although still contracted to the club, Santon was excluded from Roma’s squad list for the 2021-22 season. After rejecting a few offers to move elsewhere, there was no reintegration for the full-back.

Despite his previous relationship with Jose Mourinho at Inter Milan, the Roma boss never felt the need to turn to Santon, whose last appearance for the club was therefore back in May 2021.

Santon now leaves as a free agent as his contract comes to an end. It will be interesting to see what comes next for the 31-year-old; some reports have speculated retirement, but other clubs could come in with offers.

Whatever happens, Santon can look back with 53 Roma appearances behind him, which all came between 2018 and 2021. He never scored for the club, but did provide three assists.
