Fiorentina condemn Roma to defeat to leave European race in balance

Roma suffered a 2-0 defeat to Fiorentina on Monday night to dent a blow to their European chances.

Roma fell behind early in the first half when VAR gave Fiorentina a penalty for a Rick Karsdorp foul on Nicolas Gonzalez, despite there appearing to be minimal contact. Gonzalez himself stepped up to place the penalty into the bottom corner.

Fiorentina made it two when Giacomo Bonaventura was allowed to drift in from the right before picking out the same part of Rui Patricio’s goal with an accurate drift.

There could have been a third when Bonaventura tucked in again, but an offside in the buildup allowed a sigh of relief.

Roma were limited to half-chances still after the break, with Fiorentina using the ball better. In the end there was no urgency to reduce the deficit and it finished 2-0 to the hosts.

It means Roma have missed the chance to catch up with Lazio in fifth and are now level with Fiorentina and Atalanta with two games to go. Their finishing position could still be anywhere between fifth and eighth.

The only good news on the night was the late introduction of Leonardo Spinazzola as a substitute, marking his first appearance of the season after a lengthy recovery from injury.
