Ainsley Maitland-Niles has thanked Roma for his short experience with the club after his loan spell from Arsenal ended.
Maitland-Niles added to the English ranks in the Roma squad when he joined for a six-month spell in January.
He was brought in to provide competition in the full-back roles, but couldn’t dislodge Rick Karsdorp on the right and was hindered by the emergence of Nicola Zalewski on the left. Furthermore, he never got the chance to play in his original position of midfield.
Yet he still ended the season with a medal after playing his part in Roma’s Europa Conference League success.
It has long since seemed like Maitland-Niles will not be staying at Roma. Now, the 24-year-old has essentially confirmed as such with what reads as a farewell message on Instagram.
He posted a picture of himself with the Conference League trophy, typing: “Great way to end the season. Thank you to the Roma fans, players and staff for embracing me and believing in me as one of their own for the short period of time spent at the club. What an experience and to be a part of history with the club.”
Jose Mourinho responded, writing: “We will miss you. One of us.”
Maitland-Niles made 12 appearances during his loan spell with Roma.
