Tavagnacco v Roma Women preview: Coppa Italia campaign commences

It’s an early start on Saturday morning as Roma Women finally get their Coppa Italia campaign underway.

The Coppa this year begins with a group stage format, but Roma’s opening game against Roma CF has been postponed twice.

They now finally get to kick off their run in the tournament, as they travel to face the other side in their group, Tavagnacco.

It is almost a year since the last meeting between the two sides, which Roma won 2-0. Tavagnacco ultimately suffered relegation from Serie A Femminile.

They lost 2-0 when they played Roma CF in the only game to have taken place in this group stage so far. Now, it’s time for the biggest team from the capital to take them on.

Roma head into the game looking for their first win in over a month. Given the level of opposition, it should be a good chance to do so.

Betty Bavagnoli has confirmed she is planning to rotate her lineup and give some younger players an opportunity. However, the end goal will be the same – to claim three points.

Roma have won all but one of their past meetings with Tavagnacco. The only one they did not was just the fifth game in their history, as they claimed a 2-2 draw.

On the scoresheet for the opponents that day was Kaja Erzen, who is now a Roma player. However, she remains out of the squad for this encounter as she continues her return from Covid-19.

In fact, the squad is exactly the same as the one that travelled to face Milan last weekend. While that trip did not quite go to plan, this game gives Roma a chance for a fresh start.

Roma were the only team to reach the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia last season before it was cancelled. They will be hoping to go far in the competition again – but must focus on one challenge at a time, starting with Tavagnacco on Saturday.

Set your alarm clocks, because the game kicks off at 9am UK time. It will be available to watch live on Roma TV+.
