Five Bavagnoli quotes after Roma Women’s loss to Milan

Roma Women suffered their first defeat since September on Sunday afternoon, falling 1-0 at AC Milan.

Going into the game on a four-game unbeaten run, Roma struggled to create significant chances – and things became harder when goalkeeper Rachele Baldi was sent off after a mix-up in the box.

Roma survived the indirect free kick that resulted, but Milan finally found a way past their defence when Italy international Valentina Giacinti scored a penalty in the 70th minute.

It was the only goal of the game, and it leaves Roma sixth in the table.

Here’s how coach Betty Bavagnoli assessed the match.

On the performance

“Today I cannot be dissatisfied with this performance, even if we have been going on like this for some time. The performances arrive, today was among the best, but unfortunately the three points did not arrive.”

On the refereeing decisions

“Unfortunately some moments knock you out in football. I never comment on any refereeing decisions, but surely a doubtful moment cost us a lot.”

On showing character after going down to 10 players

“They cannot fail to congratulate the girls for their determination and organisation of the game – even with 10 players for almost the whole second half to try and recover the result. I am satisfied because I saw that the team never gave up.”

On Giacinti saying Roma play the best football in Italy

“I thank Giacinti and in turn congratulate this player, because she is a great athlete and will always give her contribution to a team that is already very strong.”

On trying to return to form

“We must treasure these experiences, these moments and episodes that we obviously must avoid. Then maybe the goals and wins will come, because if we continue to play like this, I don’t think it’ll take too long.”
