Roma are branching out into a new world after the establishment of ASD Roma 1927 Futsal, formed by the integration of Olimpus Roma into the club’s umbrella.
A format of sport that has grown in popularity over the decades, futsal is played indoors between teams of five players, emphasising technique and control of the smaller, more weighted ball.
Roma are the first Serie A club to enter a team in Italy’s top tier of futsal, although Olimpus Roma have existed since 1999.
ASD Roma 1927 Futsal will be playing in the top division of futsal in Italy, taking over the mantle from an Olimpus Roma side who won the regular season of Serie A in 2023-24.
How does the Serie A futsal league work?
Like in 11-a-side football, the league sees each team face off twice in a round-robin format, gaining three points for a win, one for a draw and none for a defeat. Olimpus Roma topped the table in 2023-24, but this wasn’t enough for the Scudetto, since the top eight teams then enter a play-out (comprising a quarter-final, semi-final and final) and in this instance, they lost a best-of-three tie in the quarter-finals.
Where will Roma play?
Roma’s home games will be held at the PalaOlgiata on Via Guido Cantini 4. It is an indoor sports complex situated north of the main city.
