Roger Ibanez ready to repay Roma faith after extending contract

Roger Ibanez has signed a new contract with Roma to pledge his future to the club until 2025.

Ibanez has exceeded expectations since joining from Atalanta in January 2020. The Brazilian had barely played in Bergamo, but got his chance in the capital after the return from lockdown.

Ibanez quickly cemented his place in the side, usually playing on the left-hand side of a back three, but sometimes in the middle.

He ended his first half-a-season as a Roma player with 10 appearances in all competitions. So far this season, he has added a further 26.

Ibanez’s form in that time has already led to speculation about his future; there have been rumours of Premier League interest.

However, his immediate future will still lie in Rome. Ibanez’s new deal ties him down to the club for another four seasons.

According to reports, the contract sees his wages increase, and also contains a release clause worth €80m to ward off interested suitors.

The defender seems to be happy in Rome for now, telling the club website: “This contract extension really means a lot to me.

“I’ve worked hard to try and show that I deserve to represent this club.

“I am aware that I need to keep on improving but there is one thing I know for sure: I will give everything I have to Roma, for the foreseeable future.”
