Houssem Aouar agrees to become first Roma signing of summer 2023

Roma have lined up Houssem Aouar as their first signing of summer 2023, various reports have revealed.

Aouar is approaching the end of his contract with Lyon, which has allowed Roma to speak to him. Now, multiple respected sources – such as Sky Sport Italia and Filippo Biafora – have confirmed that the Giallorossi have reached a total agreement with the midfielder.

A five-year contract is waiting for Aouar in the Italian capital, where he will get his first taste of Serie A football from the 2023-24 season onwards. Previously, he worked his way up through the Lyon ranks, going on to surpass 200 appearances for the senior side.

Capped once by France in 2020, Aouar has since switched allegiance internationally to Algeria, although he is yet to make his debut for them.

Aouar’s contract with Roma will begin a day after his 25th birthday.

His arrival on a free transfer will represent a continuation of a theme from last summer, when the likes of Paulo Dybala, Nemanja Matic and Andrea Belotti also arrived without a fee.

Despite the generally positive impact of Matic, Roma’s midfield has remained something of a weak spot this season – which is a problem Aouar might be able to help rectify.

Check back on Giallorossi Yorkshire later for a feature about Aouar and how this very website (seriously) influenced his arrival.
