The proposed swap deal between Roma and Inter for Matteo Politano and Leonardo Spinazzola appears to have definitively fallen through.
Roma had been close to agreeing a deal to bring Politano back to his hometown club, with the winger ready to fill the void left by the injured Nicolo Zaniolo and even going as far as undertaking a medical with the club.
However, at the same time, Inter requested further tests for Spinazzola, despite him passing his initial medical.
The two parties worked desperately to change the terms of the agreement, with the permanent swap being altered to a loan swap – upon the condition that the moves would become permanent if each player reached 15 appearances.

That formula has still not appeased Inter, however, and with the Nerazzurri set to confirm the signing of Ashley Young from Manchester United – with Chris Smalling’s former teammate having disembarked in Milan for his medical – Spinazzola is now returning to Roma.

It appears the dream move is over for Politano, who came through Roma’s academy and grew up supporting the club.
