Federico Fazio has finally left Roma after five-and-a-half seasons with the club.
The Argentine defender has joined Salernitana on a permanent transfer six months before the end of his contract.
Fazio was a regular in his first three seasons in Rome after joining from Tottenham Hotspur, earning the nickname of ‘Il Comandante’. However, he fell down the pecking order in 2019-20, despite signing a contract extension at the start of that campaign.
Paulo Fonseca barely used him during his two seasons in charge, and Fazio has not even been a member of group training since Jose Mourinho took over in the summer. Despite it being made abundantly clear to the defender that he was not part of the plans, though, it has taken him until now to leave.
Things risked turning ugly off the pitch, but a compromise has finally been found for Fazio to complete his exit.
Fazio departs Roma with 169 appearances and 14 goals. By moving to Salernitana, he is once again signed by Walter Sabatini, the sporting director who originally brought him to Italian football.
