Roma have finally managed to offload Steven Nzonzi, who has joined Al-Rayyan on a permanent transfer for free.
Nzonzi was signed with great expectations shortly after winning the World Cup with France in 2018. However, he never recovered from an indifferent start to his Roma career and ended up as one of the biggest flops of the Monchi era.
The former Blackburn Rovers and Stoke City midfielder left Roma after just one season, but only on loan. He joined Galatasaray, where things also didn’t go to plan, before switching to Rennes, who did not opt to sign him permanently this summer.
Roma were thus left in need of a new solution for Nzonzi, one of their highest earners but not part of the technical project.
He refused several opportunities in the summer transfer window, but with the market remaining open until the end of September in Qatar, Al-Rayyan have been hovering for a while.
After several bumps in the road, Nzonzi has now finally accepted the transfer, terminating the final year of his original Roma contract as a result.
He leaves the club having made 39 appearances and scored one goal in his solitary season in the capital.
Roma will be hoping that the space they have cleared on the wage bill may go some way to helping them sign a reinforcement in Nzonzi’s position, which remains a cause of concern for Jose Mourinho after the club’s inability to add anyone there in the summer.
