Roma sign Evan Ferguson on loan with option to buy

Roma have added a new striker to their ranks after announcing the arrival of Evan Ferguson from Brighton and Hove Albion.

Ferguson, who is the first Irish player in Roma’s first-team history, has joined on a season-long loan for €3m, which can become permanent for a further €38m.

The 20-year-old has spent the majority of his career so far in the Premier League, initially with Brighton and most recently on loan with West Ham United, where he failed to score from eight appearances.

His record with Brighton is 17 goals from 80 appearances, although his progress was stunted by a significant injury in 2024.

Ferguson played against Roma as a substitute in both legs of the clash between the two clubs in the 2023-24 Europa League, but now will wear the Giallorossi colours himself.

Ferguson will wear the number 11 shirt after Artem Dovbyk switched to the number 9.

Giallorossi Yorkshire verdict

Samuel B: This could be the new challenge Ferguson needs after a complicated comeback from injury. Hopefully he’ll soon understand the passion of his new surroundings, in a best-case scenario like Tammy Abraham did in his first season. There are risks to this move with his injury record and recent form but being a loan deal there’s more upside than downside for now.

Mark C: I’m excited. He looks excited. He’s young, keen and fit! Really hope he can kickstart things here at the Stadio.

Ed B: Exploded early then injury and lack of playtime burst that bubble. Even if he can’t live up to the early hype he hasn’t really had a real chance to play his way back to form. If he stays fit and Gasp can get his mojo back he could be a very interesting pickup. The potential quality is till there.

Worst case if he doesn’t work out we’ve just rented him for a year. The difficulty could be if he plays well but not €40m well. Given our finances that buyout’s not happening. If he absolutely explodes you buy him, cash in on Dovbyk and make him your star. Or flog him for a profit. Though realistically we’re prob looking at some decent minutes off bench and then a haggle with Brighton at the end of the season.

Thomas M: Has a lot of potential! given the £40m option to buy it really means he has to be scoring 20+ goals this season will be interesting to see how he plays/ competes with Artem
