Roma have announced the addition of Devyne Rensch to their right-back ranks.
Rensch has joined from Ajax and has signed a contract until 2029.
Roma were originally planning to move for Rensch in the summer when he became a free agent, but they managed to agree a fee with Ajax to bring his arrival forward.
That fee is believed to be an initial €5m, plus €1m in bonuses.
Rensch will wear the number two shirt.
Devyne Rensch: The story so far
Roma are just the second club of Rensch’s career, since he is an Ajax academy graduate.
He joined the Ajax setup in 2016 at the age of 13, before making his debut for both the reserve team and first team in 2020.
Ultimately, he made more than 150 appearances for Ajax, spending some time as their main starter and other time as a rotation player. He scored 10 goals for the Dutch side as well.
In November, he earned his second cap for the Netherlands, some three years after his first.
What Roma can actually expect from Devyne Rensch
Giallorossi Yorkshire verdict
Samuel: Right-back has been such a concerning area that it wasn’t that encouraging seeing us going for a younger, lesser known player, but I can’t judge him until I’ve seen him play. From what I’ve been told (see the link above), he’s not as limited as some critics have made out. Hopefully he can do a job, or Saelemaekers can stay if we’re going to stick with the wing-backs.
Eddie: Celik 2.0. Not going to elevate us but not a downgrade and he has age on his side at least. Shouldn’t lose money on this one. Was a prospect a few years ago. Not sure on his attitude/mental fortitide from what Ajax fans have said. Seems to have lapses. Mancini smacking him in the head and screaming in his face will be make or break I think.
Nigel: I don’t know much about him. 10 goals in 156 games, doesn’t offer much threat to be honest. Most defenders show a goalscoring option these days, is he a bigger threat than Abdulhamid or Hermoso?
Thomas: The whole point in getting Rensch is because Çelik is so inept at the offensive side of the game he’s often out of position for the defensive side. We need someone to be defensively astute more than provide attacking threat, we’re a team that’s too top heavy/more creative progressive type players. Add another right-back whose sole skill is marauding attacking runs, the same defensive mistakes will happen. Defence is stretched and that’s usually when Mancini especially makes mistakes trying to cover as the defence is too stretched. That being said he is, in the same way as Hermoso, a CB who has been converted to play fullback at times. So hopefully he can do good for us there, or in a back three if needed. Hopefully fills that half back role when Angeliño gets forward so we’re not left too exposed.
