Antonio Mirante makes way as Roma release another

Roma have released Antonio Mirante after three years in the role of back-up goalkeeper.

Mirante joined Roma from Bologna in 2018, with Lukasz Skorupski heading in the opposite direction. Initially serving as understudy to Robin Olsen, the experienced Italian overtook his teammate in the pecking order by the end of his first season.

Since then, he has competed for a place with Pau Lopez, usurping the Spaniard at the start of this season but having to settle for a lesser role after some mistakes began to creep in.

Mirante, who turns 38 in July, has thus been allowed to leave upon the expiry of his contract. He is expected to continue playing elsewhere, with Milan being one possible destination.

Roma will have to replenish their goalkeeping department this summer, with a new number one possibly a requirement. Daniel Fuzato could take Mirante’s role as main backup after a run of games towards the end of the season. The club will need to replace the veteran’s experience, though, after losing another leader.

In total, Mirante made 35 appearances for Roma, conceding 45 goals and keeping 13 clean sheets.

Grazie, Antonio.
