Fonseca questions Roma focus after defeat to Torino

Roma suffered a setback in Serie A with a 3-1 defeat to Torino on Sunday.

Things looked to have got off to a good start when Borja Mayoral gave Roma the lead within three minutes. However, the hosts began to grow into the game and their pressure paid off in the second half.

Roma only had themselves to blame as they conceded goals to Antonio Sanabria, Simone Zaza and Tomas Rincon. To make matters worse, substitute Amadou Diawara was sent off for two yellow cards.

The result leaves Roma in seventh place, further adding to the importance of the Europa League at the end of the month.

Here’s how Paulo Fonseca – who looks less and less likely to continue in the head coach role next season – reacted.

On focusing on the Europa League

“If the team is thinking more about the Europa League, then I think they need to get their heads back on Serie A. But that didn’t happen today.”

On selection issues

“The truth is we played two days ago and we had to change a lot of players. Right now we have a few issues in central defence and at full-back, but we don’t have any other options. Nevertheless, I think we could have done more today.”

On the second-half collapse

“We scored the opener and then we created further chances to score a second – but we couldn’t do it. In the second half Torino were better than us, they were more aggressive than we were. They deserved to win.”

On whether the top-four hopes are over

“I have to be honest, we still have a chance but it will be difficult.”

On missing players

“[Leonardo] Spinazzola has had a fantastic season. Today we didn’t have the option to use [Riccardo] Calafiori either, as he was tired after the game against Ajax. Also Gianluca Mancini was out, after playing in almost every game recently. And so, when you have to make a lot of changes, things like today can happen.”
