Fonseca lauds Mancini for leadership qualities after Roma beat Bologna

Roma got the job done with a 1-0 win over Bologna on Sunday before they gear up for another Europa League challenge in midweek.

The Serie A game sandwiched between both legs of the quarter-final with Ajax ended in victory for Paulo Fonseca’s side thanks to a goal from Borja Mayoral.

Fonseca rested a number of players with a view to Thursday’s second leg, but those he chose still managed to earn a narrow win to increase the points tally in Serie A.

Here’s how the head coach reacted to the win.

On how Roma grew into the game

“We struggled a bit in the first half because of the pressure they put us under with their one-to-one marking. But I think we found the right balance eventually and in the second half it was a completely different game.”

On picking Gianluca Mancini as captain for the day

“Today he was the captain, he deserved it for his serious attitude. Mancini is a player that coaches always like. He is a bit tired, but even in moments of difficulty he is an example for the team.”

On Bryan Reynolds’ first Roma start

“He’s learning a lot, he’s improving – but we cannot forget that he is still very young. He’s just joined a team in a completely different league, he’s going to need time. But today he played well.”

On whether Henrikh Mkhitaryan could play against Ajax

“Let’s see how he is then. I have to say that he only trained with us on a Saturday and played just a few minutes today. But the main thing is that he will be available for the game against Ajax.”

On the upcoming game against Ajax

“It’ll be a tough game against Ajax, they are a really good side. We will need to stay really focused defensively, avoiding making any mistakes. We will need to be at 100 per cent again.”
