Daniele De Rossi is officially back at Roma after being handed the head coach role until the end of the season, replacing Jose Mourinho.
Roma sacked Mourinho on Tuesday morning in the wake of Sunday’s defeat to AC Milan, but the fact that sporting director Tiago Pinto is on his way out too in a couple of weeks always made an interim-style appointment most likely.
The next step for Roma has been to bring back one of their greatest ever players, former captain De Rossi, who has signed a contract until the end of June.
De Rossi told asroma.com: “I would like to thank the Friedkin family for entrusting me with the responsibility of Roma’s head coach role.
“From my side, I know no other way but dedication, daily sacrifices, and giving everything I have in order to face the challenges that await us from now until the end of the season.
“The excitement of being able to sit on our bench is indescribable. Everyone knows what Roma means to me. However, the work that awaits us all has already taken precedence.
“We have no time or choice but to be competitive, fight for our goals, and try to achieve them, which are the only priorities my staff and I have set for ourselves.”
De Rossi’s first match in charge will be at home to Hellas Verona on Saturday.
Roma are the second club he will have managed in his career after a brief spell with SPAL.
During his playing career, De Rossi became a Roma legend, making more appearances than any other player in the club’s history apart from Francesco Totti.
