Mercato Monday: Roma revive Politano hopes

Roma are getting busy as we enter the last full week of the transfer window.

Matteo Politano’s return to the club appeared to be off, but hope has been restored, perhaps optimistically, by the press recently.

The right winger had completed a medical with his hometown club ahead of a potential return in a swap deal with Leonardo Spinazzola, but selling club Inter Milan tried to change the terms of the deal – forcing Roma to re-evaluate their position on the transfer.

Inter wanted Spinazzola – who only joined Roma in the summer but has not been able to dislodge Aleksandar Kolarov from his preferred left-back position – to complete a second medical, which has led to the relationship between the two clubs deteriorating.

However, while Inter may have pulled out of their efforts to sign Spinazzola (they have instead brought in Englishman Ashley Young from Manchester United, a club with whom Roma themselves are in negotiations with over buying out Chris Smalling’s loan), hope remains for Rome-born Politano that at least his side of the deal can be completed.

Today’s episode of Mercato Monday covers all the key updates, as well as why Roma’s signing of Roger Ibanez from Atalanta has been delayed.
