Jordan Veretout has revealed his pride at being Roma’s penalty taker and his admiration of former midfielder Radja Nainggolan.
Veretout has become one of Roma’s most important players since joining from Fiorentina in 2019. The midfielder has established himself as the main penalty taker at the club and retains a perfect record from the spot.
In an interview with RTL in his native France, he has now opened up on his decision to join the club and everything that has followed.
“It is a historic club,” he said, “but also the city and the life that I would have had with my family had a weight in the choice.
“I was contacted by different clubs, but in the end I wanted Roma.”
That choice has definitely paid off, as Veretout has flourished into arguably Roma’s most important player. It isn’t just for his influence from the penalty spot, but that has been one of his strongest aspects.
“This fact makes me proud,” he said when asked about becoming a penalty specialist. “When players of the calibre of [Edin] Dzeko and [Aleksandar] Kolarov tell you to take them, it inevitably gives you a lot of faith.”
One of the players Veretout has been compared to at Roma is Nainggolan, who displayed similar qualities in the midfield before the Frenchman.
And asked to name the player who has impressed him most in Serie A, Veretout looked back to his predecessor.
“Nainggolan when he was at Roma,” he replied.
