Granada confirm permanent signing of Maxime Gonalons to end difficult Roma spell

Roma have sold Maxime Gonalons to Granada on a permanent basis.

Gonalons joined Roma in 2017 with much anticipation. As captain of Lyon at the time, many thought the midfielder could offer strong competition to Daniele De Rossi.

That never happened, as Gonalons struggled to settle in Rome. In total, he made just 23 appearances for the club.

Roma loaned him out to Sevilla for the 2018-19 season, but he played even less there. Hence, the Giallorossi had to find a different buyer.

Fellow La Liga outfit Granada came forward with an offer last summer. They agreed to take Gonalons on loan with a conditional obligation to buy.

It later became clear that the condition on which the permanent deal hinged was for them to avoid relegation. They did so – and with more than enough time to spare, finishing as high as seventh.

Now, the Spanish club have officially confirmed they have bought Gonalons on a permanent basis. Roma receive €4m from the transfer.

That’s just €1m less than the fee Roma paid for him three years ago. Considering there was just one year left on his contract with the Lupi, it’s quite a good deal for Roma.
