Gonzalo Villar and Borja Mayoral make same Roma exits to Getafe

Gonzalo Villar has left Roma to return to Spain with a loan switch to Getafe, in a double move alongside Borja Mayoral.

Villar joined Roma from Elche – then in the Spanish second tier – in January 2020. After biding his time, he was one of Roma’s most used players of the 2020-21 season.

However, despite glimpses of potential, his consistency began to decrease. Following the appointment of Jose Mourinho in the summer of 2021, Villar has been on the margins.

In fact, the Spaniard has not played a single minute of the current Serie A season – and definitely won’t by the end of it, since he is now heading away.

Getafe have signed him on loan until the end of the season, giving him his first taste of La Liga football.

To date, Villar has made 64 appearances for Roma, but has never scored and has only provided one assist.

Borja Mayoral makes same move as Gonzalo Villar

Also making the same move is Borja Mayoral, whose loan spell from Real Madrid has been cut short.

Mayoral signed for Roma on a two-season loan in the summer of 2020, but is leaving six months ahead of schedule.

The striker enjoyed a positive debut season as a deputy to Edin Dzeko in 2020-21, but has been behind summer signings Tammy Abraham and Eldor Shomurodov this time around.

Whereas he scored 17 goals last season, Mayoral has only scored once since Mourinho took charge, in a Europa Conference League match.

Mourinho has also been more willing to promote Felix Afena-Gyan to the first team ahead of Mayoral, whose adventure with Roma now ends.
