Roma came from behind three times to battle to a 3-3 draw against Milan on Monday night.
In a game that was as bizarre as it was brilliant, both sides were awarded controversial penalties in the second half. On the balance of play overall, though, a draw was the fair result.
Edin Dzeko got Roma’s first goal with a header from a Lorenzo Pellegrini corner. In the second half, Jordan Veretout kept up his 100 per cent record from the penalty spot, before Marash Kumbulla scored for the second consecutive game to secure a point.
Here’s the best of how Paulo Fonseca dissected the game in the aftermath.
On whether Roma made progress
“It’s not what I wanted before the game, because I wanted to win. But after what happened, we were always behind in the scoreline, so it is a positive result.”
On why Mancini played in the middle of defence rather than Ibanez
It is easy to explain. Ibrahimovic is a very central striker, while Leao is fast and attacks the space. He is faster than the defender in the one on one. And Ibanez is a fast player, which is why I changed him with Mancini.
On the penalties given to both sides
“We all have days when we make mistakes, it happens to everyone. If the referee is wrong, he is wrong for both teams.”
On what could have gone better for Roma
“It is good that we scored three goals, bad that we conceded three. It was an even match, we conceded goals in the first minutes [of each half] but then we reacted with courage and quality in attack. However, we made mistakes with our decisions in the final third.”
On whether Roma can compete for the top four
“We want to do better than last season. Our thoughts are only on the next match. We are doing well and improving and we had confidence, we have to be ambitious but thinking game by game.”
