Roma Women got off to a dominant start in the Coppa Italia on Saturday morning, beating Tavagnacco 5-0.
They went into the game having never lost to that opponent, who had suffered relegation to Serie B since their last meeting. Indeed, Roma went on to assert their dominance.
Osinachi Ohale scored her first goal for the club on her first start to break the deadlock. There were further goals for Andrine Hegerberg and Manuela Giugliano – who started the game as captain – before half-time.
Agnese Bonfantini extended the advantage after the break with a goal on her 50th appearance (and 40th start) for the club. Then, it was the turn of substitute Emma Severini, who netted in stoppage time to become the club’s youngest ever scorer.
Unfortunately, fans watching around the world could not see most of the action, as Roma TV had signalling problems from the away venue. So allow coach Betty Bavagnoli to give her summary of proceedings.
On going into the international break with a win
“Today it was important not to make mistakes, to have a good game and win. The result gives morale to the team in anticipation of the first match after the break.”
On young players making an impression
“The thing I liked most is having been able to see Roma’s youngsters at work. Our youth sector makes us proud.”
On using the Coppa Italia to rotate players
“It was right to give these girls the opportunity to be seen on the stage of the Coppa Italia. The athletes that come from [Fabio] Melillo’s Primavera are doing a really great job. Roma can look to the future with faith with these young athletes that are growing.”
On a performance that sent a message
“I congratulate my girls, but there is always something to improve. However, it was important to send a signal today.”
On the forthcoming international break
“After this victory, maybe it would have been better to give continuity. But the break is needed for our national team, awaited by an important match [Italy play Denmark in their penultimate Euro 2022 qualifier]. My girls from Roma will go there with the right spirit, even more convinced than before.”
