Betty Bavagnoli reacts after Roma Women win Coppa Italia for first time

Roma Women made history by winning their first ever trophy with a penalty shootout victory over Milan in the Coppa Italia Femminile final on Sunday.

A tense affair at the Mapei Stadium went all the way to penalties after finishing 0-0. Roma keeper Camelia Ceasar saved two Milan penalties, and there was another Rossonere miss, meaning spot kicks scored by Roma players Manuela Giugliano, Annamaria Serturini and Vanessa Bernauer were decisive.

There were scenes of celebration after the final whistle as the group got to lift their first trophy since their formation three years ago.

The triumph was masterminded by Betty Bavagnoli, who has coached the team from the beginning. Here’s how she reacted after earning her place in club history.

On the culmination of three years

“They asked me if this evening could be the culmination of a journey and now I can say that it is. However, this journey is not yet over. It must continue. In three years we have always tried to improve our game and mentality. I am proud of these girls, with a very strong team we never gave up and we won the cup.”

On Elena Linari

“Elena, you all know her. She is a player who has improved us a lot. We have important personnel, but Elena has brought that experience and determination that we needed and will need to help the youngsters.”

On making history

“There is a lot of satisfaction. I’m really happy for the team, for Roma that gave me the opportunity and for the fans that were always close to us. They couldn’t wait to come back and see us.”

On her own future

“The Roma project goes on. I will have to sit with the club very shortly and I hope we can continue and try to do even better than we have done so far. We set off with a lot of humility and tonight we got our first satisfaction.”

On her emotions

“I am very [emotional]. We believed in this success. We worked hard on it. I have always believed in this group, but it was about giving the girls the time to grow. Now, it is not that we are the best in the world, but we are on a great journey. We have acquired such an awareness to take that extra step to make Roma talk at really high levels.”
